Introduction
This step-by-step guide is created for those who want the “Et tu...?” achievement. As you know, since patch 16.1 the mechanics of killing family members have been changed and because of this, this achievement has become unattainable.

We are talking about this button:

Player requests to Creative Assembly for a fix are ignored[community.creative-assembly.com].

This guide is largely based on the guide on downgrading the game, and therefore I will refer to it in some places.

and on the discussion of this problem here:
https://steamproxy.net/app/214950/discussions/0/6553383999312515615

I am grateful to all the author of the downgrade guide Viscount Danku and all the participants in that discussion, especially JMTAotP, Pepe
Step-by-step guide
  1. Make a backup of your current version of the game in a separate folder

  2. Download the necessary patch of the game in parts and replace your current version of the game

How to do this is described in detail here. I can only add that the current version of the program now has an .exe file and you only need to run the following command from the terminal (from the folder where this DepotDownloader.exe file is located):

    DepotDownloader -app 214950 -depot 214951 -manifest 6611980476241080704 -username <your-username> -password <your-password>

and so on for all depots listed in the guide.

    Attention!
There may be an error while downloading depot 214951 (launcher)
This is normal, just ignore and download the following depots

  3. In case you as well as I failed to download the launcher, then copy the launcer folder from your backup version to the folder with your build

  4. Turn off the internet and (possibly) change the date on your computer

Disconnecting the Internet you need to ensure that the new launcher, which you transferred from the current version of the game, does not begin to synchronize game files.

(not sure) I changed the date to combine getting the achievements from the “Make war not love” series. I changed the date to February 14, 2015.

If you find out that this step is not required, please post, I will remove it

  5. Run the game from the folder
    \steamapps\common\Total War Rome II\Rome2.exe

If everything worked out at this stage - you've done 90% of the work

  6. Get the in-game achievement

    Start a new campaign.

I chose the Iceni because they have several family members at once at launch

    Go to your faction's menu

Pick a family member and kill them (I killed all of them, just to be sure)

    End the turn.

You may now exit the game. Do it through the main menu

I got the achievement the moment I logged out of the game.

  7. Turn off Steam, return the date, turn on the internet, start Steam again

This sequence of actions led me to a result:

Conclusion
This is a detailed algorithm of what I did to get this achievement. Probably some of these steps are redundant (changing the date). If you figured it out - please post in the comments and I will make changes.

Apparently, achievement bugs are a hallmark of the Total war series. Unfortunately, Total War: Shogun 2 game has such problems and the developers are not in a hurry to fix them.

Keep this in mind in the future.

It worked! But it doesn't when launching Rome2.exe from an external folder because it was still requesting Steam to run launcher from the launching path of the app's manifest. With steam online I changed the folder's name to something like "..._current" just for backup and changed the merged depots folder's name to "Total War Rome II". Launched Rome2.exe and launcher detected version 2.2.0 even before the game opened

After downloading these, I created the "common" folder (where all depot contents are held) as per the guide. However, instead of copying the folder contents directly into the main game directory and running it while steam was online, I pasted the current launcher (the one I copied from the current version) into the aforementioned "common" folder and ran the executable (Rome2.exe) from there while Steam was online.

Using this external folder prevented Steam from updating the files, and running Steam online made the executable work—which suggests this is likely a DRM (Digital Rights Management, a system that restricts unauthorized use) issue.

Then I launched the game, assassinated a family member as described in the guide (note: the target must die, wounding isn’t enough), and after ending the turn, the achievement registered perfectly.

Thanks to everyone who contributed and authored the guide—really appreciate it! Keep being awesome! :D

Hey everyone,

I managed to solve it! Pepe (mentioned by the author) responded—though I can’t tag him since he’s not in this thread. Here’s the build he shared:

"You only need these depots:

Depot 214952 manifest: 8344583112394539306 — game files

Depot 214953 manifest: 530666364908176165 — game files

Depot 214954 manifest: 2845839234279645758 — game files

Depot 214955 manifest: 8099281786087946432 — English localization

Depot 214956 manifest: 6199525122887465067 — English localization

Depot 243665 manifest: 5900761351392481546 — DirectX and VC Redist"

Or at least the rome2.exe. I tried on Windows 10 and tomorrow will try on Windows 11

I discussed something similar with @Pepe

Try doing what he wrote here:
https://steamproxy.net/app/214950/discussions/0/6553383999312515615?ctp=2#c598533015389435154

Let me know what the result is

Same as @Starkiller. I tried with patch 17 and patch 16 but using steam://nav/console download_depot command instead of DepotDownloader. Rome2.exe won't start. I downloaded depots: 214952, 214953, 214954, 214955, 214956, 243665 and the launcher from 372531 which is from the current version. May it be a problem when running on certain CPUs? Saw this type of problem on https://steamproxy.net/app/214950/discussions/0/598523446215870535/

Hey, thanks so much for putting together this guide — I really appreciate the effort and all the helpful links you've included!

That said, I’ve spent quite a few hours carefully following the steps and reading through the additional resources, but unfortunately I still can't get it to work. When I try to launch rome2.exe, nothing happens.

I suspect I might be downloading the wrong depots. If possible, could you please update the guide with the specific manifest IDs required? That would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks again for all your work!

Great guide! Glad you figured out how to get around the launcher issue! Well done!
