This guide is for players who want to make sure they don’t miss anything important in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. There are a lot of missable scenes, items, and achievements especially if you're playing without New Game Plus. Everything here is based on a single playthrough and tries to keep things simple if you're aiming for a full experience in one run.
Dodging and Parrying: Learning the Dance, Not Just the Moves
When you step into a new area or run into enemies you haven’t seen before, the smartest thing you can do isn’t to rush in swinging it’s to hit save. Think of it as giving yourself a checkpoint for experimentation. You’re not just trying to survive; you’re figuring them out. What does their wind-up look like? When do they strike? What’s fake, what’s real? Load up, screw up, and learn. Repeat as needed.

If you ever land a “Perfect Dodge”, take it as a sign you’ve nailed the timing so precisely that you're already halfway to parrying. The two share the exact same timing. So if you’re consistently dodging with perfection, it means your reaction window is sharp enough to start parrying instead. You’re ready trust your instincts.

One sneaky detail that throws people off: when Camera Movement is on (which it is by default), the camera subtly zooms in just before a hit connects. That zoom isn’t just cinematic flair it’s a built-in timing indicator. If that throws off your rhythm, try turning it off in the Accessibility settings. With a static camera, you can often read the enemy’s body language more clearly without all the dramatic shakiness.

Some enemies give themselves away with audio tells little noises or breaths right before they strike. If you’re struggling with timing, try lowering the music volume so those cues don’t get drowned out. Is it foolproof? Not at all. The sound design isn’t always consistent across enemies, but it’s another layer you can tune into, especially during tricky fights.

Leveling Up Stats: What Actually Matters
You’ve got five core attributes to spend points on:

Vitality – More HP. Straightforward.
Might – Boosts all damage dealt.
Agility – Determines how often your characters act.
Defense – Reduces incoming damage.
Luck – Affects crit chance (crits deal 50% more damage).

Might sounds tempting. More damage, right? But truth is, in the early game especially, it’s one of the least impactful. A 10-20% increase in damage is nice, but it’s not life-changing.

Healing scales with percentage, not flat numbers. So if you stack Vitality and Defense, not only do you survive longer, but healing skills and items become way more efficient. Plus, the longer you live, the more time you have to actually learn enemy patterns and react properly.

And don’t sleep on Agility. More speed = more turns = more overall damage (and more healing, interrupts, whatever else). With high enough Speed, you can even take two turns before the enemy moves once, which is absolutely broken in the right setups.

Luck is a weird one but a powerful one. Some skills gain bonus effects from crits, and stacking Luck can eventually push your crit rate up to 75–100% with the right gear and passives. So yes, it can be a viable primary stat especially later when you’re building out synergistic setups.
Overworld Battles: Don’t Skip Them

See enemies wandering the world map? Fight them at least once. Many of these encounters reward you with new or upgraded gear and Pictos that you can’t get elsewhere. They only drop once per group, but if you rest, the enemies respawn. That means you can rematch them for experience or just for fun, but the loot’s a one-time deal. So don’t miss your chance. Some areas can get disorienting no map, twisting paths, recycled architecture. If you feel like you're going in circles, press Y (or Triangle on PlayStation) to pop up the Compass HUD. It’s subtle but incredibly helpful for regaining your sense of direction, especially in maze-like zones later in the game.
Things You Might Miss in the Prologue (But Shouldn’t)
Before the paint starts really dripping and the expedition kicks into high gear, Clair Obscur lets you linger. It trusts you to explore, to listen, to notice the weight of things before the chaos begins. Here’s a batch of easily missable little moments — some poignant, some hilarious, some just straight-up useful all tucked inside the early stretch of the game, before you leave for the mainland.

Donated Furniture

In the round plaza where you first cross paths with Sophie, there’s a quiet corner full of abandoned furniture. It's not trash it's legacy. These are offerings from those about to Gommage, left behind for the next wave. Touch them. They’ll reward you with 1x Colour of Lumina and a little emotional gut punch, if you’re paying attention. (Don’t panic if you skip it you’ll find more later.)

Richard’s Red Suit, Jules’ Crimson Threads

As you follow the path toward the Harbour, you’ll see Richard the dashing sewing teacher in a blood-red suit decked out with flowers. Talk to him. If you don’t, you’ll miss the chance to deliver a uniform to his son Jules during the Festival. That tiny interaction nets Gustave a Crimson Uniform outfit a slick cosmetic change tied to a sweet moment of generational pride.

Eloise & the Balloon Beatdown

Just behind Richard stands Eloise, watching the skies. Talk to her, and she’ll point out a floating Balloon that Gustave can smash with a single Overcharged strike. It’s a disguised tutorial, but it also gets you 1x Colour of Lumina. Mechanically useful, narratively touching worth your time.

The Life Enjoyers (Yes, All 33 Knocks)
Behind Eloise, you’ll spot a mysterious door. Behind it: a group of people enjoying their final hours before the Gommage. Curious? Start knocking. Keep knocking. 33 times. They’ll eventually crack and toss you a Colour of Lumina just to get you to leave them alone. Dumb? Yep. Delightful? Also yes.

Nicholas the Painter & the Dodge Dance
Farther down the path, meet Nicholas, a painter with a brush and a lesson. If you speak to him, you’ll trigger a duel with Sophie a slick tutorial for the Dodge mechanic. Win, and you’ll be rewarded with a Recoat item, which lets you reset a character’s stat allocation. These cost a ton in shops later, so it’s a great way to experiment without consequences.

Trash Can’s Dirty Secret
In the same area as Nicholas, look to his right. You’ll spot a plain old trash can. Or is it? Keep interacting. Eventually, it talks back and gifts you a Chroma Catalyst, which you’ll need for early weapon upgrades. You’ll get plenty of these down the line, but who doesn’t want to say they got their first one from a sentient garbage bin?

The Mime and the Missable Achievement

Just before the Harbour, hang a right. You’ll find a performance stage, and beside it, a Mime. Challenge them to a fight. Win, and you get a Lumière Record and a missable achievement: “A Peculiar Encounter.” Here’s the thing you can find this record later, but the achievement itself? Only possible in this moment. No NG+, no chapter selects. Don’t skip it unless you’re planning to replay the whole damn thing.

The Festival & Your Tokens

After the Gommage cutscene, the Expedition Festival kicks off. There are three booths where you can cash in tokens for rewards you start with one, and can earn two more.

Duel and beat Maëlle to earn another.

Complete Antoine’s Quiz for the last.

Quiz Answers:

When was the Fracture? → “67 years ago.”

First expedition to the continent? → “Expedition Zero.”

What is a Lumina? → “Abilities you internalise by using a Pictos in battle after enough times.”

Festival Rewards, Choose Wisely
Those three tokens you hustle for at the Expedition Festival? You’ll trade them in for one of three things: a Weird Pictos, a Bun hairstyle for Gustave, and most importantly an Old Key.

If you're only walking away with one, make it the Old Key. No question. It unlocks a hidden door in Act 2, and behind that door is a Lumière Record essential for the “Connoisseur” achievement that asks you to collect all 33 music tracks. Miss it now, and you’ll be locked out of that goal without a full replay.

What the Weird Pictos Actually Does
If you do grab the Weird Pictos, you can bring it to Jujubree, the first Gestral Merchant you meet in the village market during Act 1. Trade it in, and you'll get "Augmented Aim" a Lv. 5 Pictos with 39 Speed, 5% Crit, and a passive that boosts Free Aim damage by 50%. Not bad, but not essential either that passive pops up in other forms later on.

Missables Across All Acts Items, Events, and One-Shot Moments
Act I

Once you’ve brought in your third party member, you’ll run into Noco, a merchant hanging around the Gestral Village. Important: Noco doesn’t stick around forever. Buy what you want while you can especially any rarer materials or risk losing access until much later.

Maelle’s Unique Weapon: Medalum

After recruiting your fourth companion, a Gestral Village tournament opens up. Win it with Maelle, and you’ll score her special weapon: Medalum.

Weapon Details:

Physical damage

DEF/AGI scaling

Lv 4: Start fights in Virtuose stance

Lv 10: Burns apply twice while in Virtuose

Lv 20: Burns deal double damage in Virtuose

You can enter and win with other characters, but all you’ll get is a leveled-up version of a weapon you probably already have. This is Maelle’s shot let her take it.

If you skip the tournament, there’s a backup chance to earn Medalum by beating Golgra (the Chef) with Maelle later… but that fight is a monster. Act 3 endgame-level difficult. Save yourself the headache get it in the tournament now.

Karatom & The Ultimate Sakapatate

There’s a side character in the western edge of Gestral Village, tinkering with a mystery dish: the Ultimate Sakapatate. You can’t finish this quest unless you act in Act 1, so don’t sleep on it.

Here’s how it works:

While exploring Esquie’s Den, you’ll find a Mushroom quest item near the Mime.

Bring that Mushroom back to Karatom.

You’ll unlock a 1v1 duel with the Ultimate Sakapatate.

Beat it, and you’ll walk away with:

3x Polished Chroma Catalyst

Gustave’s Pure Outfit

Miss the window, and this whole subplot is gone for good.

Act II

Right after Achievement #27 (defeating the 1st Axon), there’s a missable campfire scene. Always “Check up on the others” at camp it’s how you get character-specific dialogue and a few side goodies.

In this case, do it after the piano scene with Verso, Maelle, and Esquie, and you’ll unlock a music track: “Lettre à Maelle” another piece needed for the full Connoisseur achievement.

Act III

Maelle's Achievement: Don’t Screw This Up

Once Maelle’s side quest is done and her Relationship Level hits 6, you’ll face a decision. When it comes, do not lie to her. If you do, you permanently lose access to the “Maelle” achievement there’s no redemption arc, no do-over. This one locks out completely.

More on this is covered in the Act 3 achievement breakdown under entry #39.

Floating Cemetery Chalier’s Request
Deep in the Floating Cemetery, you’ll meet Chalier, one of the friendly Nevrons who pops up across your journey. After you duel him, he’ll ask you to finish him off. If you say no, the moment passes forever. If you grant his request, he’ll leave you with the “Auto Powerful” Pictos:

Lv 19, 241 SPD, 20% Crit

Passive: Start battle with Powerful applied for 3 turns

There’s no other way to get this Pictos in the game. Decide accordingly.

Trash-Can Man (Revisited)

Only if you chatted with the Trash-can Man in the Prologue, you’ll get a final scene with him when you’re back in Lumière he hands over 1x Perfect Chroma Catalyst, just for remembering him.

Didn’t talk to him back then? Nothing happens. A quiet little missable for the completionists out there.

Reward: Only granted if you finish the request.
If you refuse, it still counts toward the achievement but no reward.
(You can return later for possible extra dialogue.)

• Noire & Blanche (The Fountain)
Help most friendly Nevrons non-lethally (Chalier doesn’t count against you).
Then talk to Blanche for a special reward.
BUT if you’ve been killing Nevrons post-help (even just one or two), Blanche will attack.
Reward for helping: [Unknown]
Reward for killing Blanche: 10x Colour of Lumina (weak sauce don’t do it unless you want to roleplay a monster.)

Achievements In Order: Prologue, Act I
A Peculiar Encounter

Defeat the Mime in Lumière.

You can reattempt this achievement in New Game+, or start a quick new game just to engage with the Mime. While exploring Lumière before you head toward the harbor, walk to the right where you'll spot a group of people dancing on a stage. The Mime is right next to them, waiting for you. Approach it, and prepare for a fight. Defeat it to unlock this achievement.

Time to Spill Some Ink

Break an enemy.

[Can be done in any combat]
This achievement is simple to unlock and can be done during any fight.

Overcharge

With Gustave, use a fully charged Overcharge that Breaks an enemy.

Upgrade a weapon once.

Lumina

Consume a Lumina point.

Find your way through Flying Waters.

[Required for Progression]
Once you've reached Goblu, just beyond the Lumieran Streets Rest Point, you'll know you've reached the end of the Zone.

[Can be done anytime in camp after Flying Waters]
After Flying Waters, you'll automatically be in your camp. After checking the campfire, you'll get the option to "Check up on the others.

Maelle, use Percée on a Marked enemy while in Virtuose Stance.

Ancient Sanctuary

Gestral Village

[Required for Progression]

Talk to the village Chief Golgra. Then you’ve gotta win the Arena Tournament.

Lune gets Trebuchim
Maëlle gets Medalum
Gustave gets Sakaram

Right after the tournament, Golgra will hand you the password for Esquie’s Nest. As soon as you step out of the village, boom the achievement pops just before the next cutscene kicks in.

Maximization

With Sciel, consume 20 Foretell on a single target during Twilight.

You can do this right after recruiting Sciel in Gestral Village. Like Lune and Maëlle’s, it’s easier in longer fights (Mimes, bosses, etc.).

Stack 10 Foretell before Twilight. During Twilight, Foretell gain is doubled apply 5 more, it turns into 10, hits the 20 cap. Spend it fast, you’re done.

Use AP items. Spectral Sweep (with crits) can hit 20 in one shot during Twilight. Or use Final Path later (gives 20 total in Twilight). Dump it with any cheap move.

Easiest

Get Sciel’s Chation weapon from Greatsword Cultists (Stone Wave Cliffs). At level 4, every Sun skill gives 10 Foretell easy mode. Downside: you take double damage, so play smart.

Esquie's Nest

Find your way through Esquie's Nest.

Legend

Unlock Esquie

Stone Wave Cliffs

Find your way through Stone Wave Cliffs.

"""""""""""""""""""""" SPOILERS """"""""""""""""""""""

Do not read this section unless you've started Act II.

Gustave dies after his last fight with the White-Haired Man, and Verso takes his place. If you haven’t gotten the “Overcharge” achievement by then, it becomes missable.Same goes for any side stuff tied to Gustave like the Pure Outfit quest in Gestral Village, or buying the Sakapatate Outfit and Gestral Haircut from the west-side merchant. You can still reload the auto-save before Act I ends. So if you wanna clean up quests or achievements with Gustave, do it before moving on.
Achievements In Order: Act II
Perfection

Get to Rank S with Verso.

Like the other character challenge achievements, you just need some time to set it up. But with Verso, it’s way easier you can just skip turns and keep dodging or parrying until you hit Rank S. During the Nevron Troubadour trial in the Stone Quarry, your rank carries through the whole thing. So if you keep failing on purpose, you’ll hit Rank S eventually no real setup needed. Equip Verso with the Sakaram weapon. It locks in Perfection so you can’t lose it makes the whole thing a breeze. Just note it removes damage bonuses from Rank, but for the achievement, that doesn’t matter.

Forgotten Battlefield

Find your way through Forgotten Battlefield.

Expedition 33

Unlock all playable characters.

Monoco's Station

Find your way through the Grandis Station.

Expeditioner

Reach level 33.

Old Lumière

Find your way through Old Lumière.

Wheel Control

With Monoco, cast an Upgraded Skill 4 turns in a row.

You just need Monoco for this one, and it can be done in any fight after you recruit him. Best advice? Keep him in your party at all times. If he’s not active in battle, he won’t learn the Skills.

You’ll naturally pick up most of his Skills just by playing, since they come from the Nevrons you defeat. I did mine using low AP moves and feeding him Energy Tints to speed things up:

Abbest Wind (2 AP) – Agile Mask (Purple)
Rocher Hammering (3 AP) – Heavy Mask (Green)
Braseleur Smash (4 AP) – Balanced Mask (Red)
Chevalière Piercing (3 AP) – Agile Mask (Purple)
Bruler Bash (4 AP) – Caster Mask (Blue)
Cruler Barrier (4 AP) – Heavy Mask (Green)

If you bring him into every fight after getting him and finishing Old Lumière, he’ll learn these naturally. Good spot to farm? Head west of Old Lumière on the World Map there’s an island with enemies tough enough to last a while. But really, any fight works.

First Axon

Defeat the first Axon.

Second Axon

Defeat the second Axon.

Monolith

Reach the Monolith.

Paintress

Defeat the Paintress.

Back to Lumière

Go back to Lumière.
Achievements In Order: Act III
Sciel

Reach relationship level 7 with Sciel.

(If you've been speaking with Sciel consistently; a short ways into Act 3 you'll be able to reach Max Relationship level with no extra fuss! Afterwards, she unlocks the Level 3 Gradient Attack "End Slice".)

Plane, Train, and Submarine

Discover all of Esquie's abilities.

Esquie

Reach relationship level 7 with Esquie.

Lost Gestrals

Find all of the Lost Gestrals.

Chroma Proficiency

Use a level 3 Gradient Attack.

Aiding the Enemy

Finish all of the Nevron quests.

Trailbreaker

Reach level 66.

Maelle

Reach relationship level 7 with Maelle.

MISSABLE

Can only be done in Act 3, after Maelle hits relationship level 5 Unlike Sciel and Esquie, Maelle requires a side quest through a major optional dungeon before you can get her past relationship level 6, and then 7.

You’ll get a map marker for The Reacher, located just north of The Crows in the far northwest of the World Map. This dungeon’s power level is pretty manageable, so you can do it early in Act 3. Just head in, fight your way to the end, and defeat the boss you’ll be back at camp shortly after.

This achievement is missable if you mess up your dialogue with Maelle during a camp scene. Do NOT lie to her; you must tell the truth or you'll be completely locked out. Afterwards, you will unlock Maelle's Level 3 Gradient Attack: "Gommage" (the best skill in the game)

Sprong

Beat Sprong.

The reward for defeating Sprong is absolutely key for tackling the rest of the optional Dungeon and Superboss content in Act 3: the "Cheater" Pictos (Lv 24, 1198 HP, 400 SPD, "Always play twice in a row.")

Lune

Reach relationship level 7 with Lune.

To unlock Lune’s relationship level 6 and 7, there’s another side quest you’ll need to do.

Head to Sirène’s Dress, on the east side of the same island where you did the Sirène dungeon. But heads up you have to talk to Lune first to start the quest, or you won’t be able to get in.

This one’s way simpler than Maelle’s. No full dungeon just a single fight against the Chromatic Glissando. If you remember the Sirène dungeon fight, it’s got some familiar mechanics.

Beat it, grab the Journal in the back, and head back to camp. That’s it you’ll unlock Lune’s level 6 and 7 relationship.

Once you hit level 7, she gets her Level 3 Gradient Attack: Sky Break.

Monoco

Reach relationship level 7 with Monoco.

Talk to Monoco at camp until he asks you to bring Noco back at the Sacred River. You’ll need to fly there it’s just north of Monoco’s Station, and it’ll show up on your map once you accept the quest.

There’s a Gestral merchant on the way with some solid level 20 Pictos (you’ll have to fight them first) and a Colour of Lumina, but the real goal is in the center trying to bring Noco back.

Right before it happens, Golgra shows up and interrupts. Monoco challenges her, and you’ll have to fight her using only Verso and Monoco.

If your damage is high enough, you can skip her second phase completely and trust me, you’ll want to. Phase two hits harder and has trickier combos. If you’re not strong enough yet, no shame in coming back later.

Once it’s done, Noco’s back, and you’ll return to camp. Talk to Monoco again to unlock Relationship Level 6-7 and he’ll learn his Level 3 Gradient: Break Point.

Gestral Games

Win all of the Gestral games.

There are 5 Gestral Beach challenge spots 1 in Act I, 3 in Act II, and 1 in Act III (flight-only). No combat here, just parkour and timing trials how tough they feel depends on your reflexes.

Beach #1 (Act I) West of Gestral Village. Sprint for the early logs, slow down for the rotating ones.

Beach #2 (Act II) Swim NE of Stone Wave Cliffs. For the achievement, just hit “The Weakest” and “Just a normal one.” Skip throws if you mess up timing.

Beach #3 (Act II) NW exit from Monoco’s Station. One slip = full reset. Take your time.

Beach #4 (Act II) East of Sirène. Sprint all the way, take the right path at the end.

Beach #5 (Act III) South of Beach, Esquie must be able to fly. Focus on the top balls, not your character plan ahead.

That’s all of them. No stress if you fall just try again.

Weapon Mastery

Fully upgrade a weapon.

À On

Beat the Serpenphare.

Carreau Parfait

Beat the Chromatic Pétank.

Noir et Blanc

Solve the Painting Workshop’s mystery.

Clea

Beat Clea.

Second hardest boss in the game.

After beating the 4 bosses in the Flying Manor and the creepy-ass door cutscene, you’ll fight Clea or rather, a twisted version made by the real Clea. This fight is basically a test of everything you’ve learned so if you play it straight, it’s a real skill check. But if you’re into cheesing fights, this is a good place to start. I messed around and found a setup that lets Maelle nuke bosses before they even breathe.

Use Maelle’s Medalum weapon (starts her in Virtuose Stance). You can win it in Act I tournament with her, or just beat Golgra in a duel later.

Stendhal = Stack every buff on Maelle and let her solo the boss.

Burning Canvas = Load the enemy up with burn effects (100+ stacks), then unleash.

Pick your poison.

Feet Collection

Acquire all of Monoco’s skills.

“Endless”

Reach the top of the Endless Tower.

Starts out easy enough you can jump in right at the start of Act III but later tiers throw multiple powered-up bosses at you at once. Don’t worry if it gets too hard. You can leave anytime, come back later, and your progress stays saved.
Achievements In Order: Act III - Final
Peace At Last

Beat Simon.

This is the hardest boss in the entire game. No joke. Go in unprepared and you’ll get wrecked. Again and again. Found just past the Golden Tree Rest Point in Renoire’s Drafts.

Legit Strategy:

Simon steals all your team’s Shields and adds them to himself. At 25% HP in Phase 2, your entire party gets wiped, and the reserve team must finish the fight. He drops a member to 1 HP. Guaranteed. If a party member dies, they’re permanently removed. The rest is pure dodge & parry hell. Some attacks can only be parried dodge is too slow.

Cheese Strategy:
Stack every damage boost on Maelle, go full “Virtuose Stance” with Stendhal or Burning Canvas, and hit for 50M+ to kill both phases instantly. Use any high Power weapon (ideally her Lv 33 Medalum).

Pick Luminas that boost:

First strike, burn damage, solo damage, crit on low HP, powerful buffs, high shield synergy, etc.
Support teammates can equip “on-death” Luminas (like +AP, burn stacks, shield gifts) to empower Maelle further.

Follow The Trail

Find all of the journals from prior expeditions.

Survivor

Reach level 99.

The End

Reach the end.

After defeating Renoir and choosing either Verso or Maelle to decide the Canvas' fate, you’ll earn the achievement. Post-credits, your save reloads at the last Rest Point with a new Record: "Our Drafts Collide". From now on, New Game+ is available at any Rest Point no rush to start it, you can keep exploring freely.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is more than a game it’s a reflection, a question, a memory that won’t quite fade. I made this guide not just to help you check boxes, but to help you linger in its world a little longer, to see everything it tried to whisper when the paint began to blur.

I too am "Whooo." But I'm also "Wheee!" So the "Wheee!" balances the "Whooo."
