Description

Monster Rancher released a year after the original pokemon - releasing  1997 vs Pokemon Red & Green releasing in 1996 - It instead takes are more life-sim/arena battle approach to the monster taming genre, but does make it so you have to care for your monster in a much more Tamagotchi fashion with feeding, work, exercise, etc. in addition to combat, rather than letting them rot in a ball.

Admittedly though, it lacks one important factor: A proper story other than some phoned in dialogue bits.
