With Claw you can drag people across/into your mines on top of bringing them into zero range.
You can also use it to handily interrupt a cash out steal. (Either by yanking away the player or the box) It's also handy to grab a dead companions statue without exposing yourself to whoever took them out.
Much like your suggestion above, I also drop mines as I run around corners, through doorways, etc. It's always fun to be halfway across the map and suddenly get either the burning notification or the elimination notice. More than once, my team has busted out laughing together over whatever poor light just ran into my explosives.
