Introduction
Dying sucks. Losing gear sucks even more. But surviving a hunt isn’t about luck - it’s about knowing where to hide, when to run, and how to escape each type of ghost.

This guide covers the best hiding spots, staying hidden, how to break line of sight, looping techniques, and escape tactics.

How to Tell When a Hunt Starts
A ghost hunt begins when the ghost actively roams to kill a player.

"What am I looking for?"

  • Flashlight Flickering
  • Your handheld flashlight & headgear camera flicker repeatedly.

  • Ceiling lights & lamps will start to flicker near the ghost location.

  • Nearby electronic equipment will malfunction.

  • Radio Static (Comms Disabled)
  • You cannot communicate via radio (B key)

  • If you try, the ghost will locate you if close enough

  • Local chat (V key) still works, but is risky!

  • Main Exit Doors Lock
  • All exit doors will become slam shut and lock, making an audible noise.

  • Exit doors will not open until a hunt finishes.

  • For difficulties professional and under, a hunt will end once a player dies.

  • Ghost becomes visible & Roams
  • The ghost appears and footstep sounds can be heard.

  • Ghosts will flicker during a hunt, where they change between visible and invisible.

  • Not to be confused with a ghost event, where the ghost does not flicker after appearing.

  • Heartbeat Sounds (If close to You)
  • If the ghost is nearby, you will hear a heartbeat thumping sound within 10 meters of the ghost.

  • Hiding will not prevent the heartbeat, only alert you that the ghost is close by.

  • When you hear your heartbeat, exit the investigation area immediately and hide.

"How can I tell when a hunt is over?"
  • Ghost sounds will stop (Footsteps, Whispering, Singing, Items thrown)
  • Switched on lights will turn off.
  • The ghost will teleport back to the ghost room and resume normal activities.

Rookie Mistakes That Get You Killed!
Rookie mistakes in Phasmophobia are really common! Below are some common mistakes that lead the ghost straight towards you during a hunt.

  • ROOMS ARE NOT HIDING SPOTS!
  • Closets & lockers are the most common hiding spots (More listed further down!)
  • You may be able to hide behind certain furniture (bookshelves, kitchen island while crouched) as long as the ghost does not walk around and spot you!

  • Ignoring Flashlight Flickers
  • All ghosts can sense electronic equipment that is held by a player. Leaving any equipment switched on in your hand will reveal your location to the ghost regardless if you are in a hiding spot!

  • Talking During a Hunt
  • Your walkie-talkie is electronic! Keep it off.
  • Talking locally will cause the ghost to hear you and roam towards your location.

  • Leaving Handheld/Headmounted Electronics On
  • All ghosts can sense any electronic equipment on the player's head or in their hand. Drop your photo camera!
  • Glowsticks do not count - EMF, Spirit Box, Flashlights, Headgear, UV lights & more do!

  • Using the Cursed Item in the Ghost Room
  • Using the cursed item may result in a hunt.
  • If you are standing in the ghost room when triggering a hunt, there is a high chance the ghost will spawn inside you, or in front of the door - blocking your exit.

  • Standing Next to the Last Ghost Event Location
  • A ghost hunt can start at the last location of a ghost event.
  • Once a ghost event is triggered, make note of where the ghost is, there is a possibility that the ghost will spawn there if a hunt begins shortly after.
  • Move away from the last location of the ghost event, to avoid the ghost spawning next to you.

  • Ignoring Low Sanity
  • Each ghost is able to hunt once certain sanity thresholds have been met.
  • This is averaged across all players.
  • Use the sanity medication to bring your sanity up to stop a ghost hunt from triggering, giving you time to collect more evidence.

Beginner Strategies – Safe Hiding Spots
New players should focus on hiding rather than running. This is the best way to listen to the ghost footsteps, as a lot can be determined about which ghost type you are facing depending on the speed of the ghost.

Intermediate Techniques – Looping the Ghost
When hiding is not an option or you simply want to learn how to loop, below are some helpful tips on how to get started.

All ghosts speed up over time when they have Line-of-Sight except for the Hantu, Thaye, Revenant & Deogen.

Line-of-Sight means the ghost can directly see a player and will start to increase it's speed.

How to Loop a Ghost (Safely)
  1. Use the furniture! (Tables, Kitchen Islands, Cars) to break line of sight.
  2. Always move opposite to the ghost's path to create distance.
  3. Use sprint wisely - burst your sprint, then crouch behind the object between yourself and the ghost to break LOS, giving you enough time for your spring to regen.
  4. Repeat these steps to continue sprinting/breaking LOS/sprinting until the hunt ends.

If the ghost is becoming too fast mid-hunt, breaking LOS (Line-of-Sight) and moving to another hidden spot behind your chosen furniture will cause the ghost to roam to the last location it saw a player, then wander in another direction. If you play this right, the ghost may just walk out of the room!

Consider Taking an Incense & Lighter Combo
if you are feeling overwhelmed by the ghost and it is catching up to you, use your incense to blind and deafen the ghost, giving you time to either run & hide, or regenerate your sprint.

"Is there a difference between incense tiers?"
Yes! This is totally your preference on which tier of incense you prefer to use. All tiers have their benefits and drawbacks, it's up to you to find out which you prefer.

To light an incense, you must hold an igniter in your inventory - Hold the incense, then press the primary use key to burn.

The incense will start smoking for a certain amount of time depending on the tier level
Tier
Seconds
Tier I
5 Seconds
Tier II
6 Seconds
Tier III
7 Seconds

Incense can be used to "blind" the ghost during a hunt. For this effect to apply, the ghost must be within the incense's range. When the effect is successfully applied, the ghost will:

  • Not be able to locate or kill players.
  • Players are able to walk through the ghost directly without dying.
  • The ghost will walk in a random direction.
  • Tier II incense will slow down the ghost.
  • Tier III incense will completely halt the ghost and freeze it in place.

After this period, the ghost will return to its regular hunting behaviour, and be able to see and kill players again.

Final Thoughts
Everybody dies in Phasmophobia, but with enough practice, lots of incense wasted and a whole lot of ghosts walking straight into your hiding spots I'm looking at YOU behind the ridgeview fridge >:( you will start to get the hang of surviving most hunts in the game.

  • Remember!
  • Flashlight flickering? Run!

  • Mute your microphone or use push to talk.

  • Switch off your electronics!

  • Run to a hiding spot & not just an open room.

  • Keep an incense close by in case you need it.

Happy Hunting!

A few questions and tips
1. I didn't think the flashlight counted as an active electronic, there has been times where i have been hiding in rooms and had the flashlight on, but the ghost didnt come in
2. On camp woodwind, if those tents are open and you arent in VR, walk into a tent during a hunt but DO NOT CROUCH, if the little plastic piece at the top of the tent counts as a sloid object, and as long as you don't crouch and enter the tent, the ghost will just stand there, for easy T3 Ghost Photos, and if you have teammates in the Hunt area, they can continue as normal as long as they dont get too close or incense it, as you are the ghosts target until you leave LoS or another player gets closer
3. *BUG FEATURE* if a player has died and their ghost has went into the Truck and back out, pressing the block voice and hitting it again (to disable it) will allow you to hear them
