Disclaimer & Warning
  • These are seriously heavy horror movies, there's plenty of gore, sometimes there's nudity, so the intended audiences are definitely adults only.
If you're not 18+, this guide isn't for you.

  • In the same vein, I highly advise against letting your little kids or younger siblings watch these.

Skip the trailers
  • I included them but almost every single trailer gives away too much of the plot and ruins it for us.
  • Go in blind and you'll be pleasantly surprised - or scarred for life - or both. After all, it's Halloween! 🎃
  • As a middle ground, I added my personal spoiler-free, short review of each movie so you know what you're in for.

10. Salem's Lot (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: A film based on Stephen King's novel. Well-made with solid acting and some suspense but few scares. It's the weakest I've watched among my list (cannot believe I'm saying this about a Stephen King-based movie but unfortunately yes), so it takes the very last spot.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 5.6 /10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 45% // Audience 40%

09. The Radleys (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: What if vampires existed but weren't trying to drink human blood? What if they were a seemingly normal family? What happens when the teenagers suddenly are faced with the truth? A well-made movie with an interesting and somewhat fresh take on vampires in a modern-day Great Britain. Don't worry about the accents. It's fine!

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 5.2 / 10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] , Critics 73% // Audience Too few reviews

08. Alien Romulus (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: A new entry in the Aliens franchise. A standalone storyline that has nothing to do with neither Ripley nor Prometheus. What is it like to live on the space frontier working on a Weyland-Yutani controlled planet? What happens if you try to escape that? Solid acting and story; too few scares; but the portrayal of the synthetic annoyed me because he / it has too many emotions for a droid. I give this one a 7/10.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 7.2/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 80% // Audience 85%

07. Longlegs (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: A movie preposterously claimed by someone to be the new Silence of the Lambs. It isn't, at all, not even close. It's set in the era of President Clinton for some reason. Predictable in every step, rendering it a bore. The script is laughable at times and how characters behave isn't real at all. How would a little girl react if she just saw a horrible thing? Keep playing gleefully with her new toy? No! The makers of this one tried to make the main character a super-human yet relatable. They failed. The villain is portrayed by a famous actor from the 1990s whom I used to like but gosh what a mess in this one. I rate this glorified garbage a 5/10.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 5.6 /10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 86% // Audience 61%

06. Oddity (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: A really good horror movie that relies on terrifying suspense. This has probably the fewest actors and characters but because it has a superb plot and they do their job well, it shines. Are you a person of logic who scoffs at the existance of supernatural? Let's see if you dare then.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 6.7/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 96% // Audience 77%

05. Curse of the Sin Eater (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: This was one of my earliest horror movies to watch since September and I loved it. Based on a British folktale and set in modern USA, how far would you go to escape the clutches of poverty? Excellent acting all around and psychological horror at its finest, with some serious thought put into how to get away from the inevitable.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 4.7/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics & Audience: Too few reviews

04. What You Wish For (2023)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: One of the earliest movies I've watched this year. I went in blind and was pleasantly surprised by this one. The idea is sort of new afaik (I didn't bother checking) and the execution is well done. There's nudity in this one so heads up.
From the first minute, I had a feeling I knew that actor but couldn't remember for the life of me from which movie. Let me save you the trouble; it's the kid from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 6.7/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 80% // Audience 76%

03. Speak No Evil (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: A very casual and fun holiday in Italy takes a turn in the English countryside. James McAvoy offers one of his best performances yet (no, I don't count Split; that was horrible!). The movie moves slowly into the territory of the terrifyng with excellent build-up.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 6.9/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 83% // Audience 84%

02. Terrifier 3 (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: Forget the It clown. This silent one is the worst. Very well-acted and terrifying (sorry for the cheap pun!) portrayal of a clown here.
Fair warning though this is the most extreme gore I've had the displeasure of watching in one sitting; more than SAW; more than Final Destination. Just unreal. Beware, plenty of nudity as well. I assume the movie makers decided to add all that in an attempt to make up for the glaring plot holes, especially towards the end. Good plot or not, this is the slasher movie of the year imho. Special mention for the very fine props and special effects.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 6.7 /10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 77% // Audience 86%

01. The Substance (2024)

  • No-spoiler summary and personal review: OMG, Demi Moore?! Is she still alive? Yes, and she delivers her best performance ever in this one, a horror movie of all genres, something entirely new to her, I believe. Beware though, the amount of continuous nudity in this one is insane. Seriously. The gore is sprinkled in then gets heavier and heavier. How much of it can you take?
I was surprised by this one taking the cake as well. I expect it to be an icon of horror in the future but I still dislike the second lead. It's as if she has no soul! and that's from watching her roles in other movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as well.

  • IMDB score and link[www.imdb.com] 7.6/10
  • RottenTomatoes score and link[www.rottentomatoes.com] Critics 91% // Audience 74%

Conclusion
I hope you liked my little horror movies binge I just shared with you! 🎃
There were a few other movies like the new VHS but I just didn't feel them so I skipped.

Let me know what's your favorites and maybe share this guide with these recommendations to your friends. Wherever you are, friends, happy Halloween! 👻

Broo, I watched The Substance last night without knowing anything about it. Went in blind and I was not prepared. Had to bleach my eyes for hours after that. :pandastunned:
