hammer kinda sucks in endgame. it does low damage that is backloaded in its slow main combo loop. its counter option, water strike, has weak follow ups compared to the stronger weapons. hammer does synergise well with dogs but their dual bladed chains are only active for 3-4 minutes - on special investigation monsters you will eventually lose their supplementary dps.

i had done a bunch of runs with hammer in earlier title updates, when it funny because it had the ability to almost full lock regular monsters, but since i started running special investigations, it felt very weak and tedious compared to the other weapons i play. however i decided to revisit the weapon on my astalos grind, and began exploring new options that it had.

the main tool i use in this run that i had not used before was silkbind spinning bludgeon. against monsters you can lock down, this move was pretty much useless - if the monster was on the ground you couldn't do any meaningful damage with it. against very aggressive endgame monsters, the iframes and mobility of keeping sway was preferred by most players. i was comfortable enough relying on regular iframe rolls and water strike against astalos that i began testing applications for this move, and found that it provided stronger punishes than a more "conventional" approach, particularly on flying moves. it also had the added benefit of aiding in mount buildup, which helped with scripting.

scripting becomes a lot looser for hammer on investigation monsters, with their very high cc thresholds. with slugger 3 and dango slugger 4 i was able to secure 4 kos at pretty favourable timings, and i figured out that i could set up an exhaust dunk after the first ko, but otherwise the majority of this run was just fighting astalos. as usual i had to figure out how to deal with shitty exhaust phase - i aimed to get most of my cc in during exhaust phases to maintain dps uptime. popping all the red bubbles i could was also important for this run because each one did as much damage as a full hammer combo, and if i didn't pop enough in 3rd enrage i often failed to defuse the anomaly state.

this grind took much longer than the runs i did with stronger weapons, because i was banking on the exhaust dunk setup, and because longer runs in general just have more time for shit to go wrong. i don't know if i'll be doing any more hammer runs in future but it was fun trying to develop a playstyle using a switch skill i haven't seen anyone run seriously before - maybe if i find another fun matchup that utilises silkbind spinning bludgeon well, i'll try it.

the first enrage phase was pretty disgusting because i whiff a bunch of swings to head, in particular at 0:56 when astalos' feet drag me towards the tail, at 1:03 when the wing gets in the way, and at 1:35 when he anomaly topples in an unfavourable position. i manage flinch poorly at 2:13 and miss a level 3 swing on first exhaust. i'm too slow with powder mantle at 2:30 so i miss a proc opportunity. at 2:47 i walk too close for water strike and miss an opportunity for golf swing. somehow the last big hit of silkbind spinning bludgeon whiffs at 3:26. at 3:44 i mess up my timing and positioning and miss a level 3 on head, which leads into a level 2 whiff afterwards. at 6:04 i'm on the wrong side of head and don't get head dragged by the tail spin move so i miss a level 1 and 2 on head. without these errors i would be approaching my CSS run time, but i'm happy with this result.

unfortunately the fucking recording lags a bit at the start and a lot at the end so i edited in my skill list. i'm just grateful it didn't stutter that long mid-fight.
