How to update HOI4 mods by yourself
By JonathλnPR
Introduction

When mods age, they tend to break. Creators of mods have to constantly keep watch and update they're mods at a steady rate so they continue to work, but sometimes creators don't have the time to do that, and mods fall out of line and break. Sometimes its due to the graphics not being adaptive of map and state changes and sometimes its due to game functionality, but most of the time its due to the game not registration the mod to work with the current version.

About the Guide

This guide will teach you a simple way of fixing a mod yourself, by updating it to be set to work with the current version of the game.

• Finding your HOI4 URL
To Start
First find yourself HOI4 either through Steam itself or on a web browser.

Then grab or remember the specific numbers in the URL from either Steam or on the Web browser, you'll be needing this for the next step.

After grabbing the numbers, locate yourself to your Steam Workshop folder located at Steam\steamapps\workshop

When you've located the Workshop folder contiune to Steam\steamapps\workshop\content. In the folder called content you'll be able to find the HOI4 workshop storage with URL numbers you grabbed, find the URL numbers and open the folder corrosponding to the numbers.

Great
you've located your HOI4 workshop storage
• Finding the Mod URL
Second

Find your mod through the Steam Workshop the same as previously, for this guide i'll be taking Colored puppets as an example.

Find the URL for the Mod, and grab the corrosponding numbers. This is the ID for the mod.

After grabbing the ID numbers, go back to the HOI4 Workshop storage and search up the mod with the ID numbers.

Then after locating your mod, open it

Congrats
you've located the mod you're trying to fix
• Manually setting the mods supported version
Third

After locating your mod, open the descriptor.mod file. This file determines the mods name, ID and other important stuff. You can open this with with any kind of code based programs, but generally just use Notepad. For this guide i'll be using NotePad++

After opening the descriptor, find the supported version and prepare it to be replaced.

The next step is to find the current version of the game. You can either find the current version through the Paradox Launcher, through Steam announcments, or through creating a mod via the Paradox Launcher which the mod you created includes a descriptor with the current version of the game.

After finding the current version of the game, either remember it, screenshot it or copy the first 4 numbers of the version of the game. When you got the current version of game, write it/paste it into where the supported version line in the descriptor file.

and Voilà
you've updated a mod to be to the current version
• Conclusion
Congratulations

The mod that you're trying to fix will now work, probably.

I can't gurantee you that this will be an instant fix, while it tend to fix some of the mods when they're updated to the current version, the only truly legitimate way to fix a mod is for the author to do it. If you really want the mod to be updated, then send a nice comment on about that the mod needs to be updated, or if the author is not active anymore, you could make a updated version of the mod by creating a new mod of it.

i hope this fixed some of the issues with older mods that you can resolve yourself.
Thanks for reading and have fun
