I do have a suggestion, I don't know if it would work or how easy it might be to make..
What about a psycast shield "belt" like item? Scale it with psy sensitivity, and protect in both range and melee, but not perfectly. This could allow for "robes" and more cloth-like gear for casters, since the psy sensitivity would buff defense and offence. Could have different variants for each tech level. Maybe not necessarily "high tech better" but maybe have them made with very different materials. This way different playthroughs could just disable the individual versions, or ignore them.
