Going Outside - How Not to Make a Five-Year Mistake
By hScarisu 🎃
It's very easy to mess up the Go Outside achievement through no fault of your own. Read this guide to avoid a common pitfall and ensure that you'll receive the achievement when the time comes.

Short Version
Restart Steam *IMMEDIATELY AFTER* you install The Stanley Parable on a new device, otherwise you won't get the achievement
But Why?
The way The Stanley Parable knows when to grant you the Go Outside achievement is by looking at your last played date on Steam and checking to see if it's at least five years behind whatever your system clock is set to. When you reinstall a game you haven't played for a while, it temporarily overrides the last played date to the present, presumably since Steam's default assumption is that you're installing for the first time, regardless of any prior playtime.

You can probably see how this could cause issues already. If you run the game in this state, you will not earn Go Outside, as the game will not see the correct timestamp for when you have last closed it. To fix this, restart Steam by right clicking on its icon in the system tray, exiting Steam, and then launching it again; your last played date should automatically revert to its correct value.

If you want the achievement, you can also just change your system clock.

Was gonna launch the game to get the achievement after not having played since 2017, as I was reminded of the game's existence from a random clip on YouTube. Decided to peruse the game's guides while waiting for the game to install, and man am I so glad I found this lol

Last I heard, they patched this, so I actually shut down the game and didn't play for 5 years lol

Because Steam was always oh, so reliable when it came to "last played" time. Almost feels like I am hallucinating how accurate my "recent games" shelf tends to be.
