Introduction:
The state of New Austin is located in the south-west part of the map. It's divided in four regions: Cholla Springs, Gaptooth Ridge, Hennigan's Stead, and Rio Bravo.
Notable Locations:
Map of New Austin:

Armadillo (Cholla Springs):

Armadillo is depicted as one of the few remaining boomtowns of the American West, in contrast to the modern industrialized northern settlements characterized by the city of Blackwater. Armadillo is a common hangout for Walton's Gang members, who continue to bring violence and chaos to the town. Duels are common, making it a place where danger is ubiquitous.

By 1911, Leigh Johnson is the acting Marshal and legal authority of Armadillo, along with local lawmen, and is well known by the local residents. He is assisted by the young deputies Jonah and Eli. According to Johnson, the arrival of railroads to Armadillo led to the decline of its regional rival, the old decaying frontier town of Tumbleweed, reducing the latter to being an abandoned ghost town at the time of Red Dead Redemption.

Herbert Moon, the general store shopkeeper, refers to himself as Armadillo's first citizen. It's unknown if he means the most important citizen, or was literally one of the founders of Armadillo, which is certainly possible given his age.

Tumbleweed (Gaptooth Ridge):

Between 1898 and 1907, Tumbleweed is a town on the decline. The theories for the reasons behind this include the lack of a railway in the town and harassment from a group of local bandits called the Del Lobo Gang, compounded by various epidemics afflicting the citizens of New Austin as well as the Sheriff Freeman's hard justice, as when the bartender wishes the sheriff would stop killing so many of his customers.

While entering Tumbleweed for the first time, John Marston sees a lawman entering the town with a Del Lobo. As the main settlement in New Austin, Tumbleweed has a saloon, a general store, a gunsmith, a butcher and a stable. Due to its desert location, daytime temperatures in Tumbleweed can reach the mid-thirties (Celsius). At night, temperatures can drop to single figures.

Notable Weapons:
Otis Miller's Revolver:

Otis Miller was a legendary gunslinger often associated with the Wild West. The leader of a gang of outlaws called the Otis Miller Boys, Miller reportedly performed the first robbery of a train in 1866, which turned him into an infamous figure and made him the subject of many dime novels.

Another famous gang of the American frontier, the Jack Hall Gang, allegedly crossed paths with the Miller Boys while roaming through the prairies of Nebraska, according to the 'Jack Hall' song.

Otis Miller was eventually shot and killed by another member of his gang, Charlie Tatum, leaving behind three children, one of which being Otis Miller Jr., who was six years old at the time. The latter would later be arrested for being the leader of a gang who robbed a train after a confession deemed him guilty. After several months in prison, he was acquitted after the confession was found to have been fabricated.

Miller's revolver was a unique Schofield Revolver made of gold and ivory and adorned with Miller's personal heraldry and engravings. Found inside a cave in Cholla Springs, this weapon appears to have once been owned by the famed gunslinger Otis Miller. This gun has an ammo capacity of six rounds, and can use Regular, High Velocity, Split Point, Express, and Explosive revolver ammo.
Notable People:
Bonnie MacFarlane:

Bonnie is the daughter of Drew MacFarlane, the owner of MacFarlane's Ranch, and has spent her whole life working on the ranch with her father. Born in 1884, she shares the same birth year as one of her brothers, Ethan, so it’s most likely that they are fraternal twins. When she was young, her father hired a "French" governess (who Bonnie suspected of not being truly French, due to the fact she spoke Russian) to teach her and keep her civilized.

She had six brothers, but five of them died from either illness or accidents. Her sole surviving brother, Patrick MacFarlane, moved to New York, where he supposedly works as a banker in Manhattan. With the majority of her generation deceased and the only other surviving male child leaving the family, Bonnie feels it is up to her to become the man of their family's ranch.

Bonnie is a compassionate and no-nonsense individual. With the loss of most of her brothers and departure of her sole surviving one, she viewed the responsibility of maintaining her family's ranch to fall onto her. As such, she helps out the farm and her father in any way as she can.
Notable Secrets:

Gangs & Factions:
Del Lobos Gang:

The Del Lobo Gang consists of mostly Mexican men who are outlaws, exiles, or opportunists. The dispute between Mexico and America has brought this gang to the town of Thieves' Landing, which they use as their main base. Here, they steal, fight, and often kill people.

Though the gang is mostly comprised of Mexicans and seem to be in conflict with the US Government over long-standing tensions after the Mexican American War (somewhat parallel to the Lemoyne Raiders, who are similarly at odds with the government over the Civil War), they appear to allow Americans into their ranks. American members can sometimes be seen throughout New Austin, alongside their Mexican counterparts.

While their main base is the notorious Thieves' Landing, they also operate out of Fort Mercer, a long-abandoned American military base in Río Bravo, the village of Twin Rocks, the old mining settlement known as Gaptooth Breach, and the abandoned farm of Solomon's Folly.
