""There was a sound outside like a child coughing and the window smashed in. An explosion of glass and fox in the curtains. The fox knew where it landed. It looked at me, his paws bleeding from the broken glass and his breath was loud and ragged. I tried to read his facial expression but i couldn′t. I didn't know what to do, he seemed to own the space he stood in, which is ridiculous, because this is my room.
This is my bedroom. What right did he have to come barging in here at 3 in the morning?
He was thrown, like a shot out of a cannon. I looked to see if there was a Ransome note but there wasn′t. So we just stood there in an awkward silence, feeling the air through the broken window.
So i thought i better say something. "Can i help?".
- Yeah, where am i?
- Your in my bedroom in mannor house.
- Oh right
- Why did you crash through my window?
- I was chased
- Chased by who?
- Toffs. It's always ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ toffs. They got a thing about fox's. Chased me all the way from Kent into the fields and on the lane. Down the roads into the outskirts of London. Chased me onto the tube where they...
- Hang on a minute. How did they get the horses onto the tube?
- Through that little gate outside for people with heavy luggage.
- Ah, that makes sense.
- Chased me on the tube all the way to Finsbury park. I got out, ran out into the park. I thought I′d lost them but their dogs picked up my scent. I ran out into the park, dogs playing in my ears. In the gardens and all the green lanes. Horses smashing down the garden fenses with their hooves. Finally, i came into your garden. And this little man, with dead soulless eyes, pinned me up against a wall. Someone produced a cannon. And the rest you know.
And that was how we met.
And the fox and i became best friends." - The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing"
