Introduction
I've noticed that many players struggle with keeping their roleplay immersive and fresh, leading to boredom. Having played Skyrim extensively for years (on my other account), I've explored various roleplay approaches and compiled some ideas and mods to help spice up your gameplay. Let's dive right in.
1. Forget it all

We've all delivered the Golden Claw to Lucan countless times and slain Alduin repeatedly, but it's time to forget all of that. While you, the player, may know every corner of Skyrim, your character does not. Embrace a fresh start, even using alternative start mods to begin outside the typical Dragonborn narrative. Your character is new to Skyrim, oblivious to what you, the player, have learned over hours of gameplay.

If you're unsure of a background, consider these ideas:
  • Approach NPCs without prior knowledge, letting their actions and words guide your interactions. Allow your character to experience the full range of emotions like betrayal, trust, or friendship based on their unique perspective.

Mods for that purpose:
- People are Strangers[www.nexusmods.com]

Consider dialogue options that suit your character's personality, even if they lead to unexpected outcomes. For instance, if your character is cocky, embrace intimidation, if honorable, reject evil actions

Mods for that purpose:
- Relationship Dialogue Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
- Immersive Speechcraft[www.nexusmods.com]
- Immersive Rejections[www.nexusmods.com]
2. Limit Skills and Knowledge
Remember, your character doesn't know everything. Resist the temptation to have them master every skill from the start. Collect recipes for alchemy, explore dungeons cautiously, and let your character learn through trial and error. Avoid rushing through familiar locations as if you already know everything about them.

Mods for that purpose:
- Alchemist's Journal[www.nexusmods.com]
- Ask The Way[www.nexusmods.com]
- Point the Way[www.nexusmods.com]
- Undiscovered Means Unknown[www.nexusmods.com]
3. Your character isn't supposed to do every quest
As a seasoned player, it's tempting to complete every quest available. However, consider if a quest aligns with your character's story and interests. Focus on quests that suit your playstyle, and immerse yourself fully in each one rather than rushing through them.

Mods for that purpose:
- Missives[www.nexusmods.com]
- Headhunter - Bounties Redone[www.nexusmods.com]
- Combat Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
- Jobs of Skyrim[www.nexusmods.com]

4. Background story of your Character

You don't need a lengthy backstory, start with a brief narrative and expand it as you play. For example, a character might flee a dragon attack and embark on a journey to find a new life using their smithing skills. Let your character's story evolve naturally as you encounter new experiences.

Your character's backstory is the bedrock of their identity, shaping:
  • Strengths and Weaknesses: A former Argonian miner might be tough as nails but harbor a fear of Nords and mines due to a harsh upbringing, excelling in close combat.

  • Motivation: What drives your character? Are they seeking revenge for a loved one lost to vampires? Or maybe they're curious about the Dawnguard or the mysteries of the Dragonborn. Whatever it is, make it a strong reason to be in Skyrim

  • Personality: From a die-hard Stormcloak loyalist to a reclusive scholar, your character's past influences their demeanor, reactions, and allegiances.

  • Appearance: Scars from a troubled childhood, unique markings from a secretive cult, or weathered skin from outdoor life, every detail reflects your character's journey.
Think about where your character grew up, who they knew, and what challenges they faced. Were they rich or poor? Did they have a loving family or a troubled past? Explore these details to bring your character to life

Mods for that purpose:
- Alternate Start - Live Another Life [www.nexusmods.com]

5. Skyrim's Racial Dynamics
Considering the ongoing civil war and nationalist sentiments, non-Nord characters may face discrimination in certain areas. Be prepared for hostility, isolation, and derogatory remarks. Decide whether to avoid these places or confront the challenges head-on by roleplaying your character's response. Seek solidarity with your own race or attempt to build bridges with Nords. Remember, Skyrim's cultural landscape favors the Nords, so navigate accordingly in your roleplaying journey.

6. Professions and Consistency
Avoid being a jack of all trades, instead, pick a profession that defines your character. Stick to a daily routine that reflects your character's occupation, whether it's hunting, crafting, adventuring, or living a double life.

Mods for that purpose:
- Immersive Interactions - Animated Actions[www.nexusmods.com]
- Time Flies[www.nexusmods.com]
- Hunterborn [www.nexusmods.com]
- Spell Research (for mages)[www.nexusmods.com]

7. Dynamic Life and Relationships
Engage with NPCs, make friends, get married, and consider having children. Develop meaningful relationships and interact with NPCs beyond quest objectives. Take notes to track your character's journey and maintain continuity in your roleplay.

Mods for that purpose:
- I'm Glad You're Here - a follower and spouse appreciation mod[www.nexusmods.com]
- Interesting NPCs[www.nexusmods.com]
- Immersive Citizens - AI Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
- Dine with Followers[www.nexusmods.com]
- Take Notes - Journal of the Dragonborn[www.nexusmods.com]

8. Miscellaneous
  • Use the Time Flies[www.nexusmods.com] mod to manage crafting time effectively. Instead of crafting everything at once, consider the impact of time passing on your character's activities. Balancing crafting with gameplay progression adds realism and depth to your experience.

  • Avoid looting everything indiscriminately. Focus on items relevant to your character's skills and needs. For instance, if you play as a mage, prioritize magical items and avoid unnecessary loot like heavy armor or weapons. This selective approach challenges you to think like your character.

  • Refrain from looting NPC homes, city barrels, or free chests unless it aligns with your character's roleplay. Respect the game world's realism by earning items through gameplay or purchasing them with hard-earned gold.

  • Avoid sprinting everywhere and opt for realistic travel methods. Use horses, carriages, or chill in camps for long journeys.

  • Consider using needs mods like Sunhelm [www.nexusmods.com]and Harsher Sunhelm Cold[www.nexusmods.com] for realistic survival mechanics.

  • Adopt a realistic approach to inventory management by limiting carried items. Use mods like Bandolier - Bags and Pouches Classic[www.nexusmods.com] for immersive storage solutions. Avoid carrying excessive items that break immersion.

  • Cook food in moderation to maintain realism. Prepare meals as needed instead of cooking in bulk

  • Explore mods like Take a Peek[www.nexusmods.com], Simply Knock[www.nexusmods.com], and Wounds[www.nexusmods.com] for added immersion. These mods improve realism.

Applying these immersive tips may seem overwhelming at first, but with practice, they'll become second nature. Soon, you won't need reminders to stay in character. I trust you'll find these recommendations valuable, and I hope they enhance your roleplaying experience.

Was starting a new modding session and saw this guide. I love it and have used many of these mods myself. Definitely recommend this guide although there's a few mods I would suggest alternatively for some things:

- Skyrim Unbound Reborn
- Dealing With Backstories
To me these help your character's backstory have far greater range and really help you roleplay a non-dragonborn character.
