Goals
I describe what I did to get a stable, enjoyable, reasonable-looking game. Other resources, like GingasVR's excellent overhaul[docs.google.com], are good, but too non-vanilla for my tastes. Meanwhile, my list only deviates from vanilla when I think there's a very good reason, like replacing VATS with bullet time because the former just isn't nice in VR.
Motivation
Fallout 4 VR sucks quite badly for modern VR standards. Gameplay is lackluster; graphics, lighting, and performance are bad; and there's plenty of VR-only bugs in addition to the bugs in vanilla. As is typical with Bethesda games, you can fix most of that with a whole lot of mods. The modding scene for FO4VR has evolved a lot over time, and as a result not all tips and tricks you read online are still accurate.

This guide aims to be comprehensive and beginner-friendly. You can choose to follow it in its entirety, or pick and choose parts for your own list.
Performance
I didn't really focus on performance because I have a powerful PC. However, I mostly avoided mods that negatively affect performance.
Support
If you don't understand something, experience in-game issues, have suggestions, or just need some help, check out the Discussions page[github.com] or open an issue[github.com].
Wait, where's the guide?
I'm using GitHub to host the guide to make it easier to track bug reports, sort discussions in threads, implement version control, and so I can use Markdown.

Sorry for the late reply, I was on holiday for quite a while. I'm happy to hear my suggestion worked! I'll update the guide to include that (once I find the time), since others also seem to have encountered the issue.

It works! I placed "Dark Galaxy Milky Way 4k Skystars 4k" one before "Visible Galaxy 4k and Framework" in priority and the night skybox is working normally now.
I didn't try placing it lower in priority since it worked as it is now.

Sorry I missed your reply. I'll give that solution a try today.

@Jacobi On my end I don't have issues with the skybox, but I can make an educated guess about what the cause could be. From the mod "Fallout 4 HD Overhaul 2k", could you try additionally downloading the file "Galaxy Milky Way 4k Skystars 4k"? See https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/65720?tab=files&file_id=255930 . Then enable it in MO2. Try placing it both before and after "Visible Galaxy 4k and Framework". Hopefully one of the two is a solution.

I think Virtual Chems is probably fine to uninstall halfway through a save, because it doesn't touch any other quests, scripts, etc. I cannot give a 100% guarantee, but I think personally I would risk it :P

I'll still be looking into the skybox issue :)

I believe that it was Virtual Chems causing the issue but I'm not totally certain since I'm still crashing on death, just much less frequently. Would it be safe to keep this disabled on my main save or should I just restart without Virtual Chems?

No worries about the skybox, it's only a minor issue and I hardly notice. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Please let me know if disabling Virtual Chems/Holsters resolves the issue!

As for the skybox: I hadn't seen that thread before, and haven't noticed the issue myself, not sure if I just didn't look closely enough or if my game is actually different. I'll investigate it, but unfortunately due to irl commitments I might not be able to do so until September. But I will let you know once I have a solution / workaround!

Today I also noticed a different issue with the Visible Galaxy skybox. It seems to be offset to the side a little so the default skybox peaks over the horizon. I looked it up and found someone with my exact issue on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4vr/comments/1dp3ij2/skybox_night_texture_problem_in_vr_with_visible/) . I'd just disable the mod if it weren't for it being a dependency of the HD overhaul.

Amazing guide by the way, it was exactly what I was looking for.
