Before we start:

1) Install Arcanum
2) Use compatability settings in steam to use Proton (I used Proton version 8 when writing the guide)

Try running Arcanum before applying any mods, it should just work, but its performance might be horrible (lags in main menu so bad its unusable). This is OK, this means we can proceed with next step. Close Arcanum process and we can proceed.

3) Download UAP (Unofficial Arcanum Patch), web search for "terra-arcanum UAP" you should be able to find it.
- high resolution mod is part of UAP
- I was using UAP version 2.0.2 at the time of writing the guide

You will need to know how to use a tool called wine, but if you are using steam and proton, very likely that you already have wine installed.

Installing UAP on Linux

1) Use steam and "Browse local files" to find Arcanum files. We will need to give path to the correct location of Arcanum to the UAP installer when using wine.
Example of my path to Arcanum:
"/home/user/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Arcanum/Arcanum/"
(we will have to reverse forward slashes to backward slashes and pay attention, Arcanum is in path twice for a reason)

2) go to where you downloaded UAP executable
3) open terminal at that location
4) run UAP with wine: wine UAP2.0.2.exe

5) Now the tricky part, tricking the installer (which is designed for windows) to find the Arcanum files.
Hit browse and navigate through the file structure to find approximate location of where your steam is with all the installed games. Reason why we do this is that the installer cant see hidden folders (those that start with a dot). We will paste the full path manually, the path we found at the start of this guide section.

Example of my full path that I manually pasted for installer to find the correct location:
"Z:\home\user\.steam\debian-installation\steamapps\common\Arcanum\Arcanum"
(notice the backwards slashes, this is important)

Hit "Next" and you should get a successful install of the mod.

Congrats, the mod is installed and you can play, and the game runs in 720p thanks to the high resolution patch that comes with UAP.

Execute the _install.bat script to apply the changes to the resolution in the game

To make this possible, considering that Steams use Proton instead of mere Wine to run the Window's games at compatibiity mode, you must install a specific tool: Protontricks . You can install using Flatpak (https://flathub.org/es/apps/com.github.Matoking.protontricks) .

Once you open Proton tricks, follow this steps:

[*] Select Arcanum from the Steam App list and press OK.
[*] Use the option "Select the default wine prefix" and press OK.
[*] Select the option "Run a Wine cmd shell" and press OK. A kind of Windows terminal will open.
[*] Enter the command "Z:".
[*] Change the directory to the Arcanum HighRes path: in example "cd Z:\home\user\.steam\debian-installation\steamapps\common\Arcanum\Arcanum\HighRes\".
[*] Execute the script simply typing "_install.bat".

Thanks for the guide. I only suggest to add a few more steps to this guide.

Change to your desire screen resolution and font size

You must specify your desire resolution in config file located at /home/user/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Arcanum/Arcanum/HighRes/ config.ini . Also you can change the font size if your resolution is high and the default font is small.

Below is an example of a resolution of 1600x900 and a font size of 18 points:

This guide worked for me on Proton 9.0-4 The only oddities were the Steam Launch game button that leads to the Sierra Launcher window will then not Launch the game. However the desktop icon still works fine. Also the loading period for the main menu was a bit long of a wait.

Thanks, I'll finally be able to play one of my favorite games again. I have an original physical copy of Arcanum, but I haven't had a CD/DVD drive in over a decade :)
