2. Bug List and Possible Workarounds
This bug list makes no claim to completeness! Workarounds are mostly suggestions, as most are not sufficiently confirmed! Proceed with caution at your own risk! [?] means unconfirmed or too few confirmations (try it!)

BUG: Audio problems. Description: Stuttering. Occurrence of sounderrors in regions with heavy rain mainly on Antigua. Also on Taranis (Mages' campsite). Help: [confirmed] Increase the value of the virtual soundchannels [Code1] 'MaxChannels' from 128 to 512. Change the other 'Audio' parameters as specified in [Code1]. It helps to minimize audio dropouts. Path/File: [...]\Risen 3\data\ini\ConfigDefault.xml Code1: <Audio

BUG: Crouch is not working. Help: [confirmed] This is not a bug, it's a feature! (If you are a serious role player on the first run you should leave the spoiler alone, would you? Just saying, things always turn out differently than you think.) You have to learn it! Try to find a trainer-NPC. This may sound strange at first, but this is intended to make some things a little harder to achieve and you may proceed more cautiously at the beginning. Whether you like it or not, it's typically for a PB game and that's how it goes. Because most people think it's a game engine related bug, it's listed here.
BUG: CTD (Crash To Desktop) with black screen (game not starting). Also other CTD's. Description: Screen goes mostly black for a few seconds (sometimes >10 sec.), than CTD. Help: 1. [confirmed] Change the parameter in ConfigUser.xml 'Fullscreen' to 'false'. Save. Then start the game. Once it started configure your settings and quit game. Now change 'Fullscreen' back to 'true'. Save. The Game starts now in fullscreen.[?] This may need to be repeated after a possible update.[?] Path/File: [%userprofile%]\AppData\Local\Risen3\Config\ConfigUser.xml (backup recommended) Help: 2. [seems confirmed] Acronis True Image [2019] (backup software) preventing it. Allow the start of Risen3.exe in Acronis Active Protection or set Active Protection off. Help: 3. [seems confirmed] Open Windows Settings > System > 'Make text bigger' to 100%. | Also right click on Risen3.exe and select Properties > select the Compatibility tab > Change High DPI settings > Check Program-DPI | Check High DPI scaling override > 'Application' Path/File: [...]\Risen 3\system\Risen3.exe Help: 4. [confirmed] Delete all non-*.pak files (Windows file extension visibility should be enabled!), if there any. (Mostly after mod installations.) Path: [...]\Risen 3\data\packed Help: 5. [?] Switch off nVidia Shadow Play in nVidia Experience (or in the new nVidia App). Help: 6. [?] Disable MSI afterburner/RTSS or other tools with overlay like Reshade. Help: 7. [?] Change parameter 'Refreshrate="0"' to 'Refreshrate="60"'. Path/File: [...]\Risen 3\data\ini\ConfigDefault.xml (backup recommended) Help: 8. [?] Set the Risen3.exe in 'Windows 7' compatibility mode. Click on Risen3.exe Properties > Compatibility > Compatibility Mode 'Windows 7' Path/File: [...]\Risen 3\system\Risen3.exe Help: 9. [?] Deactivate optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. Select the Start button, then select Settings. In Settings, select System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Select the setting under Optimizations for windowed games to turn it Off. Help: 10. [?] Game was not updated [updates deactivated] and not started for months since last game update: 1. Let steam update the game. 2. Make sure your system is also updated (Windows/ graphics driver[/steam]). Then restart your rig. Help: 11. [?] Make a desktop shortcut of Risen3.exe. Exit Steam. With Steam closed, run shortcut as administrator, it launches Steam and then Risen 3.
BUG: Game freezes or stops when (musket/shotgun) shots hit the surface of rivers or other water areas. Description: This seems common to the Steam version. (Not saved progress is lost[!]) If you can't get out of the freezed screen, try <Strg-Shift-Esc> for the Windows taskmanager and end the Risen 3 task. For this the TM has to Enabled Always On Top (setting), otherwise you will have to log out of the system: <Strg-Alt-Enter> and Log Off. Help: 1. This odd workaround is intended for the more experienced user!: [confirmed] You can get rid of this bug if you download the official DRM-free (DVD) update: Risen 3: Titan Lords - enhanced edition 64bit update (patch) from various sites for free and copy the containing Risen3.exe [V1.0.25.0] over the current Steam version Risen3.exe [V3.0.30.0] (backup recommended). [Do not install the patch over your existing installation. Install it elsewhere!] It seems there are no problems with existing save games (backup recommended) or quests if you switch the EXE (or switch back) in the middle of the game [more confirmations needed]. Keep also in mind a possibly game update or verifing the files would overwrite or reset the EXE file. And there are downsides: - The patch download is rather large with over 6GB (to receive one EXE file). (Uploading the EXE file to hosters could help others). - The ability to earn steam achievements for this game is gone[!] if you apply the EXE from the patch. If you switch back to the steam version EXE you have to repeat the steps for eventually missed steam achievements if you want them now, which is tedious. If you already have the achievements or it's your second run or achievements are irrelevant for you, maybe you are fine. So think carefully about whether you want to do it. (If you own the last GOG version of the game you might also consider that game EXE.) File: [Risen 3: Titan Lords - Enhanced Edition 64-bit] patch download from various websites. Help: 2. [?]Switch off the auto-save function in game options maybe help, but it's unconfirmed.
BUG: Lag and non-audio stuttering. Description: On some systems the game feels laggy or sluggish. Help: [Confirmed] on mostly older or lower end systems. (However, it should no longer occur on newer average gaming systems.) Someone has uploaded a no-fog file that could help if needed: https://steamproxy.net/app/249230/discussions/0/6118730946100665544/ First backup the original file and store it elsewhere (since the PACKED folder should only contain PAK files). Copy the downloaded file to: Path/File: [...]\Risen 3\data\packed
BUG: No skills/abilities visible in menu Description: This bug occurs mostly on older or low end systems.[?] Help: [?] This thread may help: https://www.gog.com/forum/risen_series/risen_3_no_skillsabilities_visible_in_menu_solution
BUG: Random crashes. Help: [?] Selecting windows 7 compatibility mode. Workaround is also listed under 'CTD'. Since I've never encountered random crashes this bug may be more hardware/os related on older or lower end and/or unstable systems, at least as far as the last game version is concerned.
