babby's first lance run. initially i was getting times in the 10 minute range due to my inexperience with this weapon, but over the course of several weeks i gradually began to figure out the rhythm of the weapon (my movement with lance is still pretty trash though).

astalos is a monster i am very familiar with but optimising my punishes and setups on a new weapon still took a lot of time. it would have been far more difficult if i didn't have such great sources to learn from, so i really appreciate the work the following runners have put into demonstrating how to play this matchup:

i've managed to achieve a run that was way faster than i thought i would be able to get - my initial goal was to just get under 7 minutes. but upon reviewing this run and seeing everything that went wrong i'm sure a sub 6 is possible under perfect conditions, or at least a sub 6'10 with perfect play and very good ai rng.

the main question i got while streaming this was why the fuck i was using frostcraft lance. the frostcraft here is strong because i sheathe every time i shock trap astalos to charge him up, when i ride him, when i sheathe to use the marionette spider, and every time i sheathing retreat when he does head beam and exhaust charge (i am so lucky he only did one exhaust charge at the end in this run, not having to deal with this move saved me so much time). i got a full frostcraft bar to spend 6 times in this run, and in less lucky runs where he does a lot of head beams and exhaust charges, i can get more than 10 frostcraft refreshes.

the shock traps are very strong because astalos' charged moveset and hitzones give way bigger punishes for lance - in particular the double wing slam sequence gives huge damage with 2 instablock cross sweeps and a full skyward. this sequence is usually followed by tail plug which gives triple poke, leaping thrust and another full skyward. punishing uncharged enraged astalos' wing slam is a lot more difficult - you need very specific positioning to land skyward on his head instead of his wings, and you can't cross sweep before doing so (example from azuki's run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnmKOPtfHmY&t=50s).

i got lucky with the first enrage in this run, with astalos only doing one bad move (the electric ball spit) and giving me so many skyward openings, particularly with the air flinch at 1:25. this let me mount him almost immediately in the first exhaust phase - on my typical attempts i'd mount him during second enrage. being able to ride astalos and ko him during the exhaust phase sustained my dps uptime - typically on exhaust you have to deal with a lot of shitty moves and you lose a ton of dps.

i also got lucky on the second exhaust when astalos just spammed the wing drag attack and gave me a ton of skywards. if he did the tail spin or god forbid exhaust charge i'd get a fraction of the dps i did - these favourable exhaust phases were what saved me the most time in this run.

what lost me time were a bunch of minor errors and mishaps - the 2 cross sweeps where i hit white numbers at 0:37, powder mantle not proccing at 2:03, not getting an extra poke in at 2:36, missing a skyward tick at 2:44, 3:00 and 4:24, missing a leaping thrust at 3:10, astalos attacking my dog at 3:12 and the stupid electric ball into divebomb sequence at 3:30.

if i had cleaned up my play this could have probably been a sub 3'10, but i am still very happy i could achieve this time and that i got some cool skyward anomaly topple dunks.
