[HOW-TO] Fix Long/Permanent Load Screen
Tekijältä Chris Winters
This seems to be a very old issue that isn't likely to receive an official fix. The problem seems to be that Darksiders 2 attempts to connect to a server, but that server is no longer online. So far the only workaround that worked is to load Steam in offline mode... until now.

The Fix
This guide is specifically tailored for a Windows system, however, the steps provided should offer enough information for anyone using a Linux system to create a new rule for the firewall of your choice. A firewall is necessary as we will be creating a new Outbound rule to block Darksiders II from attempting to connect to a defunct server.

  1. Launch Windows Defender Firewall
  2. Click on "Advanced Settings" on the left hand side
  3. In the new window that opens, click on "Outbound Rules" on the left hand side
  4. Click on "New Rule" on the right hand side
  5. In the wizard that opens, leave it set on "Program" and click next
  6. Click on "Browse" and navigate to the installation folder where Darksiders II is installed. Click on the "Darksiders2.exe" file to select it. Click "Open", then click "Next"
  7. Ensure "Block the connection" is selected and click "Next"
  8. Ensure all 3 options are checked and click "Next"
  9. Give the new rule a name and click "Finish". I suggest "Darksiders 2" for simplicity but the name doesn't really matter.

Congrats. You have just blocked Darksiders II from attempting to access a server that no longer exists. Tested on Windows 10 Version 22H2 and confirmed working. "Start Game" now instantly loads into the save selection screen.

And the best part: Steam no longer needs to be in offline mode.
