Thomas's Ragtag manual
By tms.hu
This is somewhat of a unofficial instruction manual, which not only includes newer finding related to unexplained moves, but also includes accurate input descriptions for controllers, all sorts of unmentioned regular shortcuts, giving story descriptions to the DLCs and, also includes more detailed cheat descriptions.

Welcome
Hello everyone!
I never thought I make a guide let alone a “manual”, but seeing how many forum posts, comments, etc. I see right now online, about modern controls, or asking about inputs, etc I thought why not.

The fact Aspyr didn’t make a competent manual at the very least for these games is a bit sad, considering if somebody purchases this Remaster in the hopes that they are getting an easy to understand remaster, they gonna be super confussed.
I mean technically they made a "manual"[support.aspyr.com].
But it’s very bare bones and somehow slightly inaccurate, but more on that a little bit later.
This guide is still somewhat a work in progress, considering things like driving are left out, and the fact a random update could make somethings inacurrate. But it's still a lot better than a shot in the dark, and even console users can get a lot out of it.

With all of this out of the way, let’s get started:
Contents of this manual
Within this guide I will go through the controls, the moves, it’s gonna be mainly modern controls focused, because I think most people will remap their tank controls anyway, but tank controls fans should also stick around considering this game has moves, not just from the trilogy, but from later games as well as completely new features. It also includes the synopsis and the level description of the dlcs. Either taken from the original manuals and interviews from Philip Campbell the original designer. Althrough I wrote the level summary for Unfinished Business myself, because there wasn't any. There is also a more detailedly written Cheat section. Aspyr's cheat page[support.aspyr.com] was kinda vague too me, until I saw a Youtube video.
Side note: The Switch and Playstation mapping is based on logical assumptions. I only have a laptop, a Steam deck and an Xbox controller.

Notes:
Modern controls have, basically 2 action buttons: Action and Secondary.
The action button is used in order to interact with objects, pickups and key items.
The Secondary button is for Shooting and Grabbing (AKA ledge grabbing, Vaulting, wall climbing, Monkey swing).

Moveset
-Last chance grab:
Introduced in Angel of Darkness, if Lara runs of the ledge while you hold the Secondary button, she will automatically grab the ledge with both of her hands every time, no Legend trilogyesque occasional one hand balance loss.

-Side + Back Flips:
Only available, when you pull out your weapons, both in combat and platforming (you can still back flip from climbable walls i.e ladders and other surfaces like that, and also from slops, but that’s it)

Back Flip:
Hold Weapon button+ tap jump button + tap down/move LS down

Side Flip:
Hold Weapon button+ tap jump button + tap left or right/move LS left or right

-Mid-air turn:
Lara can turn around, while in the air, now you can also use it in TR1 as well.

Mid-air Turn from forward jump:
Tap jump button + tap up/move LS up + immediately press the roll button

Mid-air Turn from backflip:
Hold Weapon button+ tap jump button + tap down/move LS down + immediately press the roll button

-Back stepping:
Hold Weapon button + tap down button/move LS down once.
OR
Press Look button + hold the down button/move LS down back. While still holding the down button press look key to toggle it off.

- Sidestepping:
Press the Look key to toggle to look mode. While in it hold walk button + left or right. Keep holding them and press look key to toggle it off.

- Swan Dive:
From Idle: Press and hold the jump button, immediately after press forward + walk button.
From Running: Keep holding forward, press jump + walk button.

-Swan Dive with Somersault:
Same as the regular swan dive except pressing the Roll key after diving makes Lara do a somersault on the way down.
While Lara is in her Swan Dive animation press the roll button.

-Headstand:
While holding to a ledge, hold walk button then press forward.

- Swimming:
Lara swims freely in all directions relative to the direction the camera is facing (also includes how far up or down you are looking), no need to hold the jump button. To swim to surface, look up as much you can and move forward until Lara breaths again.
You can swim forward, backwards, and sideways freely on the surface. To dive, hold the jump button. To grab a ledge low enough, hold forward + Secondary button.

-Crawling drop:
Introduced in Chronicles, you can now get out of crawlspaces that face a ledge without needing to turn around and grab a ledge.
You need to be inside a crawlspace and then press jump. Lara won’t do the move if the drop is lethal.

- Backwards crawling:
Hold the walk button while crouched and tap backwards.

- Grabbing a ledge from crawling position:
Use the backwards movement described above until you are positioned backwards towards a ledge, hold the walk + grab button, then hold backwards.

- Diving roll from sprinting:
While sprinting, keep holding forwards and press the roll button.

-Crouch rolling:
Brand new move, but well known in fan-made levels community.
Duck button + roll button.
You can also steer yourself in place to a specific direction by holding the weapon button.
Vehicles
Personal note might remove it later: After doing some experiments I am starting to fully understand the modern vehicle controls. Thankfully based of personal experience you can beat Tomb raider 3 without knowing about this controls (sadly that's not the case for 2, but they are at least easy to figure out). But it's still ludicrous to me that they didn't describe these things.

Outfit Changer
Now with patch 3 there is an official outfit changer, for both pc and console.
It gets unlocked if you finish the game, at least once. It works even if you finished the game before the release of the patch.

1. Load a save file, or start a new game.
2. Open up the options menu.
3. Find the sunglasses icon.

DLCs synopses
I included them, because if somebody new would play them in a normal manor, they would be lost considering not even a text screen appears before starting each of the levels.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business (North American title: Tomb Raider Gold) is an expanded version of the original Tomb Raider that was released in 1998, shortly after the release of Tomb Raider III, on Windows and for the first time on Macintosh. It has 2 different chapters and 4 levels.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Two expert levels of Lara’s dramatic return to Atlantis – Lara has discovered the existence of a ruined segment of the alien city, allegedly containing a hive of surviving creatures guarding an alien hatchery. She must destroy the aliens before they infest us again!

“The idea behind ‘Unfinished Business’ was to create an alternative ending to the game, where Lara would come face to face with an almost overwhelming horde of alien creatures defending the ‘hub’ of their territory...It is pitched as an ‘expert’ challenge, and is intended to be played as a continuation of the original game. A tangible form of alien architecture was created with logical locations and connections, so that the alert player could make informed decisions about where the goals of the levels lay. Transparencies were used everywhere to help generate this ‘sense of place’, and of course to foreshadow future (and often deadly) confrontations!” - Phil Campbell

Atlantean Stronghold

Lara thought by defeating the newest tyrant of Alien origin, she could have a quick getaway and well-deserved break. Unfortunately, demons from another world, can still breed as much problems as demons from our world could. “I hope I can manage to take a long breather, after living this hellhole.” She says so out loud.

The Hive

“They seriously think as a Hive mind they can stop me” Lara thought. “No matter I do enjoy a good omelette mixed with meat in the morning.” Lara smiled while cocking her shotgun the hatchery is not so far away from her now.

THE SHADOW OF THE CAT
Lara returns to the city of Khamoon to discover the secret of the strangely beautiful cat statue, and sets off on a new adventure following the trail of the cat to it’s deadly and mysterious conclusion.

“The cat statue discovered in the original game triggered off a series of ideas – what if Lara returned to Khamoon to investigate?...what if the ruins had become flooded?...what if the cat statue actually pointed the way to an undiscovered tomb – dedicated to the legendary Egyptian cat-goddesses? – we developed a story with a very strong cat motif, in murals, in hieroglyphics, benevolent cats that guide, malevolent cats out for your blood! Puzzles where developed based on the Egyptian interpretation of the ‘nine lives of the cat’ – so you KNOW that you’re not going to have much luck with Seth’s room!” - Phil Campbell

Return to Egypt

After many months Lara started reminiscing about his recent adventure. “That cat statue was so strange, but yet so beautiful.” She thought “I know curiosity killed the cat, but I feel like that cat has so much secrets and so much intrigue.”

Temple of the Cat

Lara is ever closer of finding out the secrets of her friend. “I hope her friends are as friendly as she is. It would be a shame to waste all of their lives.” Lara wondered.

GOLDEN MASK

Released in 1999 for Windows and Macintosh. Unlike the other two expanded games however, this contains no story ties to its corresponding game from the main Tomb Raider series: its plot is completely unique. It has 4 levels, and a secret level.

During the course of her day-to-day investigative research, Lara comes across some ‘clues’ referring to a small island in the Bering Sea – Melnikov Island; a faded photograph showing an Inuit Whalehunter holding what looks like an ancient Golden Mask; an old newspaper from 1945 referring to a conflict over an Alaskan gold discovery; and a secret blueprint in Russian showing what looks like some kind of fortified military minebase. Lara is primarily interested in finding the Mask, as it is rumored to be the famed Golden Mask of Tornarsuk – a ‘greater spirit’, said to bestow powers of re-animation on the mask wearer.

The Cold, Cold War

Arriving by helicopter at an island glacier somewhere in the Bering Sea, Lara finds that mercenary treasure hunters have got here before her and are looking for the ‘Lost Gold’. The mercenaries are part of an organization known only under the acronym A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E.

Dramatic confrontations and snowmobile battles ensue, as Lara is forced to find a way into the heart of the old complex…

Fool’s Gold

The facility is, in fact, a secret Russian Government Mine, long since abandoned, but populated now by mercenaries and wild animals…. The Russians had obviously built themselves a stronghold in this ‘national no-mans-land’ to help themselves to the enormous gold reserves discovered here. But why was the mine abandoned so quickly? – What did the Russian soldiers see here that scared them so much? Did any ever return safely to their homeland? – Lara delves deeper into the mine and finds….

The Furnace of the Gods

An area where the ‘prospecting’ has suddenly stopped and a pile of skeletons fragments and some eerie cave paintings seem to issue a stern warning. The mine had been built above an ancient Inuit settlement - a warren of cave dwellings, sacrificial chambers and furnaces. As Lara battles gold-hungry mercenaries she discovers the truth about the strange artifact…The Golden Mask of Tornarsuk.

The Kingdom

The Kingdom is a lush tropical valley…a ‘Shangri-La’ hidden from the world for thousands of years. Ancient technology has been used to keep the heat and light pouring into this mysterious chasm – but for what purpose? What revelations is Lara about to uncover this time?

THE LOST ARTIFACT
A mini-sequel to Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft. It was released exclusively for PC and MacOS in 2000. Unlike the expansion packs for the first two games, this was initially sold as a standalone product rather than as part of a re-release and was not available for free download for existing owners.

Only minutes have passed since the hideous creature that Dr. Willard had become gasped the last breath of its violently short life cycle. The experiment had failed, the gleam of immortality returned to the stars from which it came. Lara looks on silently, oblivious to the press of the bitter Antarctic wind. Suddenly a ragged figure emerges from the dark, gaping hole of the meteor cavern - it is Willard, a human reborn, but in the throes of death. A hand gestures wildly, a final guttural laugh tears through the silence, the figure slumps forward and is still. With the snow already forming a ghastly shroud over the body, Lara quickly tears an object from the dead man’s grasp. A wallet, its monogrammed ‘W’ now standing sadly against Willard’s last earthly remains. Inside, the usual collection of tattered mementos, a hodge-podge of foreign currency and…but this cannot be! A familiar expression glides across Lara’s face - an eyebrow raised by a wry and knowing smile. Before her, a telegram urging an immediate return to take possession of another artifact now secure beneath the Scottish mists at Willard’s Loch Ness Estate. “The adventure continues,” says Lara, to nothing but Willard’s dark laughter still ringing in her ears.

“So there is a fifth...”

Highland Fling

Highland Fling It has been said: “Dead men tell no tales.” Fortunately for Lara, Willard’s wallet was screaming at her. Why would a dying man hold out his wallet to someone who just put an end to his life? Was Willard trying to tell Lara something? A warning, perhaps? ”Hmmm...what have we here?” Lara wondered, picking up a monogrammed leather wallet no doubt made from the hide of some poor, endangered species. Some foreign currency; a few English Pounds, Dutch Gliders, even Japanese Yen. A map of England, and what seems like a photo of Willard’s estate. “ Well, well,” mused Lara, “it looks like I have a fan. He has a newspaper clipping of me. I didn’t know he was so ... attached.” A yellow piece of paper catches her eye. It’s a telegram to Willard from one of his henchmen. “Fifth Artifact found stop. Delivery confirmed to your Loch Ness Estate stop.” There’s more in the message, but the rest is unreadable except to mention that someone else knows about the Fifth Artifact. “So it’s back to the UK for me. Where’s that helicopter of mine?”

Willard’s Lair

“Willard must have been holding something pretty special to have all of those guards around,” thought Lara. “They must not know about the failure of his experiment - but the telegram said that the Fifth Artifact was here. It’s obviously not in the main part of the castle - perhaps the Loch’s natural seclusion hides a deeper, darker secret... A dungeon - perfect for subversive activities and hiding things! The best way to go? Find a locked gate and get on the other side of it.”

Shakespeare Cliff

Lara, for once, was at a loss - someone else had reached the Fifth Artifact first. But who? The telegram had warned of someone else. They must have it. Whoever they were, they were good - Willard’s guards continued to blindly guard something that wasn’t there. And what of this glowing substance, deadly to the touch? A nasty little by-product of the missing artifact, no doubt... Stumped, Lara returned to her mansion to figure out her next move. A few days later, an unexpected intrusion on morning tea - and her next clue arrives blithely up the garden path, conveyed by a surly paperboy. The repairs to last week’s tunnel explosion had begun - her morning paper reporting the destruction caused “by some unknown force.” She notices that a “mysterious glowing substance” had been found in the mangled remains of the tunnel - a very familiar glow... Lara grins as she concludes her breakfast... “Ugh! Cold tea! - but a piping hot trail.”

Sleeping with the Fishes

After crawling through the tunnel debris, Lara finds a secret entrance to an underwater laboratory. Her competition for the Fifth Artifact seems to be well financed. The underwater loading docks must be for some sort of clandestine operation. Is this a government installation or a private enterprise? Lara knows of only one person with that kind of money ...

“It’s a Madhouse … a Madhouse!”

Lara has become well acquainted with the Fifth Artifact and its terrifying powers. The quest should end now, but there are too many unanswered questions. Who’s behind all of this? What were they planning to do with the Fifth Artifact? Why were the mutated prisoners being shipped to a closed down French zoo? Were there further experiments being carried on at the zoo? Just what kind of power does this Fifth Artifact have? All would doubtless become clear as Lara pulls herself ashore on a deserted French coast.
