What I wish the game told me clearly when starting
De către Poioioio
This game is awesome in many ways, but rough at the edges.
I'll leave out the thingy you gotta discover by trial and error in the game, the crafts recipees and other such stuff.
I'll try to convey the things I wish the devs told more clearly, because of the frustration or misunderstanding I went through.

Though I'll try not to, I'll unveil bits of the dev works that may hinder full immersion. But then again, some untold stuff and misunderstanding did too for me. I suggest you get a feel of that immersion by playing at least a couple of hours before reading more of this guide.

I'll also try not to repeat the things the game conveys very well on it's own.

This is a game about evolution
Yeaah, kinda. The game is about it, but don't get worked up. The path your clan takes is kinda limited, you won't do any kind of selecting breeding to maximize your chances. Minimaxing things is not really a part of this game. Explore and enjoy the ride, no rush about evolving it will happen eventually. Plus, there's REALLY a lot to explore on your way.
You remember when you got bored of the Witcher3 and dropped it for a year, unfinished, because you went too hard on the grinding and optimized the fun out of the game.

This game can be very hard in the beginning. You are basically a prey. Avoiding combat is a very legit option.
Some deaths will occur. But don't worry too much, that's part of life. Plus, the game is nice about it.
This is no dark souls, your clan will most likely not die, and you won't lose much progress by dying.
Simple explanation of the HUD
There's some information overload and underload in this HUD.
The green point : it's your health bar, big is good. When it gets orange, take a break, do nothing for a couple seconds.
When the point is little, you need either food, water or sleep.

Notice the icons on the left when you eat stuff ?
The green ones with SHIELDS are buffs. Identify what gives them.
The clan thingy on the right pulses with electricity ? You're doing something correcly. Continue. Sometimes, something you've done a thousand times gets to buzz that way. It's normal and wanted. Everynow and then, try doing again stuff you discarded as useless, you will have surprises.
Let's get to it, Game Mecanics
Clan limit : 6 adults, 6 elders, 6 children.
Get 6 children fast. Pick up 2 on your avatar.
At some point, you'll want to get a hang of the combat system. That's what elders are for. Otherwise, bring everyone with you all the time.
There's actual real safety in numbers in the game.

Some children get the shiny mutations, cool.

When you pass a GENERATION, they get to be adults. (Shiny mutations still do nothing at this point.)
When you EVOLVE, you skip a bunch of time depending on what you achieved. All the shiny mutations on adults are activated and made permanently won. Yay.

You are in charge of triggering the generation skip and evolution skip whenever you feel like it.
Try to do the generation skip and do it somewhat regularly.

If you don't, that's when you lose some progress.
Communication : hominids are bots after all
The bots are very passive, they handle basic survival and that's about it. They leave you do all the
trial and error and the discovering. How nice of them !

At some point, you get bored of sharpening dozens of sticks.
Since it's not very ergonomic to be bossy, here's my tip:
  1. Yell for long to get everyone to follow you.
  2. Get a branch.
  3. Double-tap-yell to tell them to imitate. Give them time. They come pick branchs.Yay.
  4. Swap hand. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  5. Alter to remove the branchlings. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  6. Pick up a rock. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  7. Alter until it's pointy. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  8. Swap hand. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.

If you're really lucky, all your ducklings have pointy sticks in their main hand now.
If not, here's what most likely happened:
  • not enough branch/stones for everyone
  • if you picked stuff from a pile, they won't consider getting similar stuff from somewhere else than this pile.
  • you missed a double yell.
  • you used a specific rock/rocktool you ain't got plenty of lying around.

If it gets messy, here's how to tell them to drop everything:
  1. Get a couple of anything in your hands.
  2. Drop stuff from main hand. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  3. Swap hand. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.
  4. Drop stuff from main hand. Double-tap-yell. Give them time.

Bonus note : eating and drinking requires free hands. Bots just stop sustaining themselves when they got stuff in their hands. If you treck for long like this, they'll get their healthbar circle all tiny. So every now and then, make real break. Make everyone drop everything at an oasis, eat and drink a bunch.
MOST IMPORTANT THING
Enjoy!

@Shibbleton They're good suggestions, don't get me wrong, but I don't think this is what the guide intended. Also multiple group members on a journey away from the settlement isn't useless when you consider that, while traveling on the ground, you have a better chance of an attack from a nearby animal being targeted at one of your group members instead of you. For people who don't have the dodge/attack muscle memory set in, definitely travel in small groups of some kind.

Mentioning the need of a specific neuron for double tap yell imitation is pretty important tho, you got that down.

your clan members cant imitate your actions other than eating, drinking or sleeping. to unlock imitation you need a specific neuron.
travelling with your whole group is useless unless moving settlement, which is only useful if you require different resources or want to move biomes.
before you leave your settlement to explore, farm your neurons, you should make sure to upgrade intelligence, dexterity and motricity, at the least. its best to farm for as long as possible, then your chances of survival are vastly increased.
however all of this is useless if you don't know how to properly perform all in game actions, search up tutorials, experiment etc. you should be able to confidently dodge and counterattack, and learn medicinal recipes for broken bones and lacerations, etc. then you're sorted.
this game is definitely designed to get rid of players who cant quite hack it. if you've played 5 hours and still have no idea what you're doing, this game might not be for you.
