A few years ago I spent an unreasonable amount of time playing Euro Truck Simulator.  This game - which really had no particular goal besides "drive a truck around europe" was an amazingly chill and relaxing activity, and I've always had a soft spot for truck games ever since.

Logistical is a chill strategy puzzle game built around the idea of routing trucks to different industries and towns, and trying to satisfy the needs of the towns to proceed. Although it’s a very different game from Euro Truck Simulator, it does have that relaxing chill vibe in spades, and so if you're looking for something that meets that description, you should try it out -  Especially if you want something with gentle yet amusing truck sounds.   On a note of personal disappointment, sadly, Logistical is a WIndows-only game.   My kingdom for a Mac port!

There are a few hurdles to get over if you want to play Logistical. And when I talk about those hurdles, I'm going to have to say things about the game that aren't complimentary. I'm highlighting this because even though I'm about to criticize the game, I do...kinda love it.  But we have to be honest about the things we love, so here goes.

First off, the game does not look great. The UI is busy and unpolished, the scale of the maps means that often you are looking at a display with hundreds or even thousands of clickable targets on it, and while the graphical design has a CONSISTENT style, it's not really a MEMORABLE style.

Logistical modules or maps cover various locations, at various scales, all over the earth, from sites as small as the ABC Islands in the Caribbean, to landmasses as huge as Australia and Russia.  There are, at last count, over 29 different modules spread across several different games. This is great, because it means you can choose the level of complexity you want, but it's also bad, because you are given a bewildering set of options. To make matters worse, there are at least four different launchers for the game, and different countries can only be accessed through different launchers.  Fortunately, the game gives you an indication of what launcher you need on the start page.

Lastly - and this isn't bad, it's just something to be aware of - the game mechanics between the modules can change dramatically.  The first Logistical games are all about completing towns by building up industries.  Logistical Romania is all about eliminating Vampires.   In other words, each map has its own puzzles.  In Logistical 2 Suriname - which STILL confuses me - you have to UNLOCK towns by delivering supplies to businesses, which will occasionally spawn a new industry every so often.  Logistical 3, which you’re seeing here, plays on a map of the entire earth. All of these differences keep the gameplay fresh, but it does mean you have to be willing to work at understanding the mechanics a bit.

Despite these complaints, let me be clear: I love this game. I love it not just in spite of its weirdness, but because of it. Like its spiritual cousin Dwarf Fortress, Logistical is not a committee project, but the product of one developer, one vision.  I love that weird games exist, and what they lack in polish they sometimes make up for in uniqueness. I don’t know you will love Logistical or hate it, but one thing I know for sure: you’ve never played anything quite like it.
