Streamliner Series Teaser Pack - Baltimore & Ohio Capitol Limited

解説
It's a New Year's Eve Surprise!

Hello all, 611 Hype Man here, and today I bring you my first non-locomotive reskin. That's right kiddies, today I release the first reskin for themeatballhero's streamliner teaser pack, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad! Since this is just the teaser pack, these are not meant to be complete representations of real cars, but, in the spirit of the old Con-Cor and Rivarossi model train sets of the 1980s and 90s, I've made a good interpretation of cars the B&O might have owned and proxies for some cars they did own. Without further ado, on to the history.

America's First Railroad enters the Streamlined Age

As anyone knowledgeable about American railroading will know, the Baltimore & Ohio was the US's oldest railroad, laying their first tracks in 1826. As they grew and developed, the B&O ran an array of passenger trains of varying prestige, from small Appalachian locals to the overnight Capitol Limited from Jersey City to Chicago via Washington DC. The B&O was one of the first railroads to get into streamlining and otherwise modernizing their trains in the 1930s, with a 1935 experiment named the Royal Blue and a 1938 re-branding of the Capitol Limited as as a streamliner, powered by the first of a long line of passenger diesels, the EMC EA. Unlike their deep-pocketed rivals, the Pennsylvania and New York Central, B&O's first streamliners were created from rebuilt heavyweight cars, but were largely indistinguishable from the outside. Shortly after WWII, the B&O bought true lightweight cars to re-equip their Columbian service as a streamliner. These cars would eventually wind up in the general passenger pool as time went on, and would be joined by a variety of other lightweight cars bought secondhand as the 50s drew to a close. The blue and grey with gold striping livery originally made for the 1938 Capitol Limited would become somewhat of a standard for the B&O passenger fleet, and cars in this scheme could regularly be seen up to the Amtrak era post 1971. As for the B&O, it would go on to become part of the Chessie System and not officially be abolished until the creation of CSX just after its 160th anniversary in 1986.

What's Inside?

This is the first and most comprehensive of a series of B&O car packs using the teaser models. This pack includes:
  • 71' Smoothside Baggage Car with random numbers from 600-699
  • 60' Smoothside RPO car with random numbers from 80-99
  • 85' Smoothside Coach with random numbers from 5500-5549
  • 85' Smoothside 40 seat Diner with 5 random names
  • 85' Smoothside 4-4-2 Sleeper with 10 random names
  • 85' ACF Dome Coach with 2 random names
  • 85' Pullman Rounded Observation Lounge with 4 random names

All cars come out in 1938 (except for the dome, which comes out in 1949), and have all the features listed in themeatballhero's base pack here: https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3119617484

Closing Thoughts

"Unlike some railroad, especially the Penn Central and Southern Pacific, the B&O did not drive passengers away deliberately. Those who still chose to ride the remaining trains could count on clean, comfortable, decent conditions in which to travel..." - Harry Stegmaier.

This was a big project but I hope that you all enjoy it. There may be some updates in the future, especially since the base models for these are likely to get a few updates. But, be on the lookout for more varieties of B&O passenger cars in the next few months! And who knows, maybe one of these days I will get around to finishing the B&O ALCO FAs I keep talking about. Anyways, have a good day!

All of the screenshots meant to be the Metropolitan/Old Main Line are great. Did someone make a more accurate map of Maryland while I wasn't looking?
