Notes Before We Start
This is a glitch I found yesterday. I have not been able to find this method online, so I assume it is new. If it is not, please let me know who figured this glitch out first so I can credit them!

This worked for me, but I haven't tested it on every Skyrim version ever made. Please test it out, and let me know if it works or not so I can update the guide!

Below will be an updated list on the versions of Skyrim the glitch works on.

Skyrim Special Edition
  • Works on the latest patch
  • Should work on all patches (?)
Skyrim Anniversary Edition
Thanks to Releros for testing this.
  • Works on the latest patch
  • Should work on all patches (?)
Skyrim (Original Game)
  • Works on the latest patch
  • Should work on all patches (?)
What you need
You do not need a lot for this glitch, all you need is:

  1. A follower that you can give commands to. (Armored Trolls, War Dogs, Ect will not work)
  2. The unique item you want to duplicate
  3. A place to duplicate in peace. I recommend Whiterun's Bridge to the castle.

That's it, you're ready to go.
Let's Get Started
So in this guide I will be duplicating Harkon's Sword[elderscrolls.fandom.com] however I have also duplicated Mehrunes' Razor and the Shield of Ysgramor.

Steps
  1. Drop the item on the ground
  2. Command your follower to pick it up
  3. As soon as the item is gone from the ground press TAB, to stop commanding them and then instantly make a quicksave with F5.
  4. Press F9 to load the quick save
  5. As soon as you see the game load, load the quick save again (press F9)
  6. if the item has been duplicated, you can command your follower to pick it up and repeat steps 3-5 as many times as you want.
  7. Once you have duplicated the item as many times as you want, pick up the item yourself. (This is to properly remove it from the cell)

Note: You need to load the quick save TWICE, it will NEVER show up on the first load.

Please don't get upset if it doesn't work first time, the timing on the quicksaves and quickloads are extremely precise. It took me 6 tries to get it for the video below, so please just keep trying and it should work.

Tips and Tricks
So the timing on this is quite finicky, so I have some tips to make things a bit easier.

  • This glitch is slightly easier with items the companion will not equip. If your companion equips the item (like with Mehrune's Razor) the timing becomes very precise. So it may take more attemps.

  • DO NOT do this glitch in interiors, specifically city interiors. The glitch can make it so the item is set as "owned" by the faction, meaning if you pick it up it counts as stealing. It is best to do this in city exteriors.

  • If you are doing this in Whiterun, DO NOT do it near the entrance. This is because there's a child NPC who will pick up valuable items and return them to you. If she is marked by the game as 'ready to pick up the item' the glitch will not work. (at least in my testing)

  • When quick saving, it is best to wait roughly a second before loading the quickload. This isn't set it stone, meaning you don't need to wait exactly 1 second, however it does seem to make the odds of the glitch working higher.

  • When loading, you must wait for the game to start showing before quickloading again. However you shouldn't wait too long as that seems to ruin the glitch. I use the "fade in" as my marker. So when it starts to "fade in" I will quick load.

  • When duplicating a Two-Handed weapon, the time you need to wait between the first quick load and the second quick load is a little longer. I suggest watching the Voldndrung Duplication Video to get a better idea. You wait until the "fade in" is almost complete.

If you do this glitch and find any tips, please leave a comment so I can update the guide.
Please Help Me Make The Guide Better
As more people do the glitch, it should improve and become easier as people find tips.

If you find any tips / tricks, please comment! Or If you have a problem with the guide, and have a way for me to improve it I'd love to hear from you.

So giving credit to a glitch, is really difficult since you can't really know who was the first; so I've decided to go for who was the first to upload / teach / talk about anything about a dupe glitch. Thanks to Asalis in the comments for pointing out the origins as it made it **a lot** easier to find the, hopefully, original videos.

The Mannequin Dupe
The oldest video for a mannequin dupe I can find, and here's the thread it came from [gamefaqs.gamespot.com]

The video is from a user sladex_13[gamefaqs.gamespot.com], and I cannot find another user who uploaded this glitch before he did; so for now I'm going to say that sladex_13 was the person who first found the mannequin glitch, on Nov 14, 2011.

The Follower Dupe
The follower glitch is a little bit more confusing. The oldest thread I could find talking about a potential follower dupe was Weapon Dupe and Follower Glitch[gamefaqs.gamespot.com] which links to a, now privated, YouTube video which potentially showed this glitch for the first time.

Since I can't confirm the contents of that video I've decided to go for the next oldest video that I could find. Which is skyrim ANY ITEM duplication glitch (commentary) by gamerbadazz

This is the oldest video that I can find showing off the glitch, and it pre-dates any forum posts I could find.

So for now, I am going to say the person who figured out the follower duplication glitch first was gamerbadazz, on Dec 8, 2012.

okay since it's Saturday and I have nothing better to do, I've looked a bit deeper into the origins of the glitch; using what Asalis told me as a guide.

The oldest video for a [mannequin dupe] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mhiGdvtopA) I can find, and [here's the thread it came from] (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/615803-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/61023240)

Asalis Thank you for all the info, I never knew about the history of the glitch! I assumed someone else figured this out before me but I've never seen anyone do the quick save way; but NOW I finally understand that this is just another form of the save / load glitch!

Honestly thanks a lot for informing me! You seem knowledgeable so if you know who the first person who found this glitch was; please let me know so I can credit them instead!

Ironically enough this glitch was first discovered as a mannequin glitch. It used the mannequins in purchasable homes (after you bought the furnishing for it) where you'd put the items you wanna duplicate into the mannequin and then without leaving, take them all back, but it could only be done with equipable items. Then leave the instance and come back in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5tkOn98hdI

it was later adapted after it was discovered you could do it with followers. And from there the follower glitch was born.

I think the mannequin part of this gltich has since been patched out, but the Follower end of it, still there. :P (I dunno about this, haven't tested it to find out if it has been patched out or not.)

OH! Do NOT go over 60,000 items for a stack using this method as the second the stack in your inventory goes over that numerical integer, it will disappear entirely along with the initial item you used in this duplication glitch

Also also, do NOT duplicate The Elder Scrolls. It WILL corrupt your save file. Sometimes so bad that you will lose it depending on when in the main story you perform said duplication. Had to reinstal the entire game from scratch with cloud save turned off a few days after to fix mine. >.>;

Frankly i'm surprised Bethesda STILL hasn't patched this glitch. Seriously this was a day one discovered glitch.

This is the follower duplication glitch. It's a well-known glitch. This glitch has been around since the Original 32-bit Skyrim was released back in November 11th, 2011, and was one of the first glitches found. It was (at least at one time) the most well-known glitch that practically everyone back then knew about.

I use it quite often. Here's a video about it from one year ago.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mSmiJcquKw

And one from 9 years ago.

It doesn't matter how but you need some kind of loading screen from when your follower finishes picking up the items, and when you wanna duplicate them. be it a save file, fast travel, goring through a nearby door and back, doesn't matter. Soon as they finish, initiate the loading screen.

Okay, so the test so far has shown that Solstheim dragon masks are big more stubborn about being duplicated and I haven't had any luck with them. Maybe I just haven't gotten the timing right for them, but other non-Solstheim masks seem to duplicate just fine. Will comment again if I have any further updates or notes.

@scout_beingshotinvincible33.wav it does! I wanted to focus this guide towards Unique Items specifically, since that makes a catchier title. But you can duplicate almost anything in game this way!

It's also really good compared to other dupe methods, since you only need 1 item!
I found out it works with gold ingots, too. So if you're trying to max smithing or anything like that it's even easier.
