What is grass?
Grass is a type of plant that belongs to the family Poaceae, which includes about 12,000 species of plants that are found all over the world. Grasses are characterized by having narrow leaves, jointed stems, and flowers that are arranged in spikelets. Grasses are also known as monocots, meaning that they have one seed leaf when they germinate.

Grass is one of the most common and important plants on Earth, as it covers about 40.5% of the land surface, excluding Greenland and Antarctica ¹. Grasses provide food, shelter, and habitat for many animals, such as deer, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, and birds. Grasses are also the main source of human food, as they include cereals, such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, and oats, as well as sugar crops, such as sugarcane and sorghum. Grasses are also used for other purposes, such as making paper, fuel, clothing, insulation, construction, sports turf, basket weaving, and medicine.

Grass has many benefits for the environment and human health, as it can improve air quality, filter pollution, reduce erosion, moderate temperature, lower stress, and promote well-being. Grass can produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the air, which helps to combat climate change. Grass can also trap dust, smoke, and other pollutants, and prevent them from entering the water cycle. Grass can also prevent soil from being washed away by rain or wind, and help to retain water and nutrients in the soil. Grass can also cool the surrounding area by evaporating water from its leaves, and provide shade and comfort for people and animals. Grass can also reduce stress and anxiety, as it has a calming and soothing effect on the eyes and mind. Grass can also stimulate the senses, as it has a pleasant smell, texture, and sound.

Grass is a versatile and valuable plant that has many uses and benefits for humans and nature. Grass is a living organism that can adapt to different climates and conditions, and can grow in many places. Grass is also a renewable and sustainable resource that can be harvested and regrown. Grass is a plant that deserves our respect and appreciation, as it plays a vital role in the balance and harmony of life on Earth.
How did this expression originate?
“Touch grass” or “go touch some grass” is an internet idiom that essentially means “get off the internet and go outside.” People online use it as an insult when someone seems out of touch with reality, especially on social media. It’s also become a meme, with many image macros featuring images of people touching grass.

While the expression “touch grass” is a recent invention, it shares similarities with some common English idioms. It’s an online version of the phrase, “get your head out of the cloud,” which means “get with reality.” It’s also related to “get some fresh air”—however, “touch grass” is significantly more antagonistic. There’s also “get with the program,” which means acknowledging something is true.

It first appeared back in the mid-2010s on Twitter, though it wasn't particularly active. It spread well during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many people became really hysterical due to the fear induced by the media and could behave inappropriately. Then they were advised to get some fresh air and take a break from the Internet, which could sometimes be a form of trolling, as in some countries being outdoors as such could be considered a violation of the Covid regime and punished.

The expression has since taken hold and is essentially analogous to calling an opponent an inadequate person who spends too much time arguing on the Internet, along with a recommendation to turn off the computer/phone and go outside.
How to start touching grass?
Here are some detailed instructions on how to properly touch the grass:
1. Find a suitable location where there is grass. Grass is a type of plant that has long, thin, green leaves that grow close together on the ground. You can find grass in parks, gardens, fields, lawns, or other places where there is soil and sunlight.
2. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and the environment. You may want to wear gloves, long sleeves, pants, and shoes if the grass is wet, cold, or dirty. You may also want to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat if the grass is in a sunny area.
3. Approach the grass with caution and respect. Grass is a living organism that provides oxygen, food, and habitat for many animals and insects. Do not step on, pull, or damage the grass unnecessarily. Avoid areas where there are signs of pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals that may harm the grass or yourself.
4. Bend down or kneel on the ground near the grass. You can also sit or lie down on the grass if you prefer, but make sure you are comfortable and stable. Do not touch the grass with your face, mouth, or eyes, as this may cause irritation or infection.
5. Gently extend your hand and fingers towards the grass. You can use one or both hands, depending on your preference. Try to touch the grass with the tips of your fingers, the palm of your hand, or the back of your hand. Feel the texture, temperature, and moisture of the grass. Notice how the grass bends, sways, or tickles your skin.
6. Explore the grass with curiosity and wonder. You can move your hand along the grass, or pick up a blade of grass and examine it closely. You can also smell, listen, or look at the grass and its surroundings. Observe the color, shape, size, and pattern of the grass. Listen to the sound of the wind, the birds, or the insects. Smell the fragrance of the grass, the flowers, or the soil. Look at the sky, the sun, or the clouds.
7. Enjoy the experience of touching the grass. You can touch the grass for as long as you like, as long as you do not harm the grass or yourself. You can also invite others to join you, or share your thoughts and feelings with them. You can also take pictures, draw, write, or sing about the grass. Touching the grass can be a relaxing, fun, or inspiring activity that can connect you with nature and yourself.
