1.if you see someone screaming for help while adventuring rush into action and charge in
2. stay far and watch as the poor sap who needed your help die
3. kill off everything else now that they have targeted you (self defence)
4. go home with some shiny new loot that is all legally yours since the old owner is indisposed
5. smile big and wide

Well, its just like Fable in that respect. You can be a hero or you can watch a sod die to a bandit, and legaly loot them both.
Thats the joys of role playing!

Can confirm, always tried to save traders, failed two times.
First was an ironmonger with small loot.
The second was an armour trader, dropped armours of 10K value.

you can help them, obtain guineas, obtain positive rep, and then kill them to obtain their loot.

THIS 100%.

I was trying to be a hero but just a single dead merchant completely changed my experience.
I was struggling but I looted a large club, cash and a bunch of things to sell off and buy upgrades.

The game becomes so easy after that.
