Personally I’d recommend running some tests, either when you have the time/desire or when I’ve got a moment to make a new sandbox strictly to observe the staff/feeding patterns. In the event you go with the alternate food option I’d say herring is the best bet

It would appear not to be the case, though the fridge icon itself does not appear- rather it is the fish mix itself

strange, the fish chunks are basically reskined live food feeders. Did you forbid the staff to use the fridge? I know the game gives a bit of priority to animals over live feed feeding.

On top of this, I have a personal suggestion: change the diet from fish chunks to... anything else? once my sand tigers got to the adult stage, my staff- try as I might, restrict them to feeding priority only/zonation/highest stats, the staff never went to refill the fish chunk supply- despite also having the fish fridge, and even having the fridges as top priorities- they refused to even touch the fridges/chopping sections and allowed three of my sand tigers to starve.

oh I see. The icon is a bit outdated, I and I have forgotten the gills on the recent one.... Facepalm

weird....

I noticed that on the icon for the Sand Tiger, the gills are well defined. But when I took a photo of the fully grown Sand Tigers, there are no gills. Is this intentional or was it accidental whilst you were altering the texture for realism? I have an image if you need me to provide it via dms

Yes this is a really late reply. Should be posting in the Porbeagle shark.
