Interesting facts about James Buchanan:

*James Buchanan has been ranked by historians for decades as one of the United State's worst presidents, if not the worst.

As the last president in office before the Civil War, Buchanan faced the unenviable job of trying to heal a nation being torn apart by slavery, a task that would require someone with god-tier diplomatic skills and help from God to resolve peacefully. To put it politely, Buchanan was not that person: Despite one of the most impressive resumes of any president (he was a lawyer, representative, senator, ambassador, and secretary of state), Buchanan was a Northerner with pro-Southern sympathies, and his tactic to heal the rift was to tell people that the law said slavery was legal, we should accept it, and that Northerners had no right to tell Southerners how to live.

Shockingly, this failed to work.

After a few years aggressively pursuing policies, decisions, and actions that benefited slave states, Buchanan was then faced with Southern states threatening to secede from the Union. His response was to say that seceding was wrong, but the Federal government had no power to stop states from doing so.

Realizing that war was inevitable at that point, Buchanan decided to let Abraham Lincoln take care of everything and happily left the White House, confident that history would validate all his decisions.

*Buchanan was the first president born in Pennsylvania. They don't like to talk about him.

*Buchanan has been theorized to be the first gay - or possibly asexual - president, due to his 10-year relationship with Alabama Senator William Rufus King. However, we will never know for sure if he was gay or not due to his personal correspondence being destroyed by his niece after his death.

*Buchanan was quite the drinker, and was known to consume incredible amounts of alcohol without getting drunk, while his peers would quickly become intoxicated.

*Was there anything positive about Buchanan's presidency? Despite everything he did (and failed to do), I think there is: his failures as president provide valuable lessons on the importance of standing up and fighting for causes that advance human rights and dignity instead of trying to stay neutral. Furthermore, Buchanan was, by all accounts, a decent man who did not try to take advantage of a nation bitterly divided to try and amass absolute power for himself like so many other tyrants, dictators, fascists, and presidents before and after him, so he has that going for him.

Finally, Buchanan's presidency paved the way for angry Northerners to form the Republican party and elect Abraham Lincoln. So, in a way, Buchanan was the man most responsible for the birth of a political party that would produce many legendary leaders in the decades to come, and for that we can cut him the tiniest bit of slack, and an equal amount of thanks.
