SyberiaTWB - Game Play/Replay and Achievement Considerations
Af rebob777
This guide describes detailed considerations and ways to manage the process of restarting the game at different points and how that may affect gaining achievements. It includes how to make custom restart points as well as how to use the Microids supplied save_segments.

1. General Information
There are some things players of Syberia: The Word Before (SyberiaTWB) may want to know, especially if they might want to replay certain parts of the game. Other players might want to go back to get achievements that they missed. There are certain things the player must know in order to fulfil their goals other than just to play and complete the game.

When the player first starts the game the options are:

Profile 1
Profile 2
Profile 3

I suggest always playing from the same profile. What was probably intended was to allow up to three players start and play the game independently but there is only one game play folder so that doesn't work.

Then the next options are (Main Menu):

Continue - This is the choice to continue where the player last stopped.
New Game - Obviously start from the beginning
Options - Game options
Previously - Starts a video on what happened previously in the Syberia series
Credits - Credits
Quit Game - Orderly exit
2. How Microids Saves Game Positions and How to Get There
First, let's discuss how microids saves the game position when the player quits after playing for awhile so that the game continues from where or near where the player was when they quit. There is only one save for this game. On a Windows PC (7,8,10,11) it is:

C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\SyberiaTWB\save.bin and save.bin.bak (where C: is assumed to be the system drive)

Unfortunately, the Windows default settings hide the AppData folder. The user must go into the Control Panel/File Explorer Options, click on the view Tab and select Show hidden files, folders, and drives rather than the default Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives. Do don't leave there yet. Also unfortunately, the default windows settings hide the .bin (and other) extension, so, while you are there, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. Now click on Apply, then OK. Now you'll be able to navigate to and see save.bin.

Note: In File Explorer enter %AppData%\SyberiaTWB Enter to get there.

There is a video in SyberiaTWB Guides/Modding or Configuration/Game Save Info which show how to set up a PC to easily get to where save.bin is with just mouse clicks.
https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2979857231

If Patch#1 (there are 4 Patches) has been applied you'll also see a bunch of Save_Segment...bin files. We'll discuss them in a moment.
3. Save.bin Details
Let's discuss save.bin. This file contains the changeable environment conditions/decisions information up to one certain point in the game. It is updated periodically as the game is played, when the turning gears are seen and other times when you may not see the turning gears. So when you exit the game, save.bin may be several seconds old and when the game is restarted/continue the start point may be several seconds before where it was exited. The significant point to remember here is that some conditions/decisions affecting later play and certain achievements are carried forward when the game is continued and new conditions/decisions are accumulated until the next stop. So save.bin changes as the game progresses.

What is save.bin.bak? This is a backup of save.bin that may have an earlier time stamp than save.bin but may be useful if save.bin gets corrupted.
To use it instead of save.bin do the following:
1. Make a copy of sav.bin.bak (^C^V) save.bin - Copy.bak
2. Rename save.bin to something else like save.bin.old
3. Rename the backup copy to save.bin e. g. save.bin - Copy.bak > save.bin
4. Making and Using Custom Game Positions
If the player wants to be able to go back and replay a section of the game they can save save.bin to another safe location. It can be renamed so it can be remembered e.g. save 06 - Begin Kate at The Refuge Tram Stop.bin. Remember, save.bin contains info from where the game stopped. So save 06 ...bin will contain the environment conditions/decisions up to where the game was stopped. So as the game is played, and each time it is stopped/exited the player can copy and rename save.bin and save it in a safe folder, accumulating a series of start positions. The player will then be able to go back and start replaying from any of these positions. I had 26 saved start positions as I played through the game and they are listed, for reference, at the end.

To start the game at one of the saved positions, do the following:
1. Copy the saved position from the safe folder into the folder where save.bin is.
2. Rename save.bin to something else like save.bin.old e. g. save,bin > save.bin.old
3. Rename the saved position to save.bin e.g. save 06 - Begin Kate at The Refuge Tram Stop.bin > save.bin
4. Start/Continue the game. It will start at the saved position.
5. Stopping the Game
Let's discuss how to stop the game. The easiest way is to click on the gear in the upper right of the screen. This only works when the movement of the character, e. g. Kate, can be controlled. It won't work during cut scenes and dialogs. The best time to try is just when the gear, album, help, etc. icons first show up after a cut scene. Click on the gear and then click Main Menu. It says "Any unsaved progress will be lost." Then "Time since last save min:sec". Then click "Confirm" which presents the Main Menu. There, click "Quit Game" then "Confirm". So, since the saves are incremental the game play for the Time Since Last Save, min:sec will be lost. If the game is stopped just after the icon cluster with the gear appears, the time since last save will usually be less than 10 seconds. By the way, the game can be stopped with Alt-F4 but that may corrupt save.bin.
6. Microid Supplied Save Segments
After Patch#1, Microids provided 46 Save-segment ... .bin files which provide restart points for the player but they did not tell you at what point the game would restart. There are clues such as present means Kate and flashback means Dana. At the end I'll give you the locations I found for each of the stat segments. So just, like described for player saved start positions, pick the save_segment from which to start and do the following:

1. Make a copy (^C ^V)(Copy Paste) of the selected save segment e.g. save_12_Segment_Present09.bin > save_12_Segment_Present09 - Copy.bin
2. Rename save.bin to something else like save.bin.old e. g. save.bin > save.bin.old
3. Rename the copied save_segment to save.bin e.g. save_12_Segment_Present09 - Copy.bin > save.bin
4. Start/Continue the game. It will start at the selected save_segment position.

When a new game is started, is played a while and then stopped the 46 save_segments appear. It appears that the conditions/decision information past where the game was stopped are empty and as the player continues, the save_segment locations passed get filled in with the current information. This conclusion is based upon looking at the time stamps of the save_segments as play progresses. This means that if the game is restarted to an earlier point, the conditions/decisions made prior and up to that save_segment point will be there, but changed decisions will not be carried forward. This is important in gaining some achievements.
7. Achievement Considerations
Now the topic of achievements can be tackled. There are many single event achievements which can be attained by going back and replaying a segment. One is Eavesdrop - attempting to listen to a phone conversation. But there are some achievements that span multiple events through the game. The Loyalty and Betrayal achievements are examples of that. The informantion about decisions made at the earliest time must be carried forward continuously or stop/continue from the same point to one or more decisions made at a much later segment until the achievent is gained at the last segment involved. The achievement can't be gained from going back and replaying the segment where the first decision is made, stop and then start just before the last point where the achievement is resolved. That last save_segment still has the original information in it. Just know that if the goal is to get all achievements, there's going to be a lot of replaying to do.

Hi rebob777. This information is very useful and helpful.
My question is how do I get a future save segment that I haven't played yet? This is because the game keeps getting stuck on the scene of the refugee battle in 1944, and I want to go to the save segment immediately afterward to play from there. I appreciate your help.
