1. Before Patching: Restart Your PC
To prevent issues during the patching process it is best to restart your PC beforehand.
Otherwise you might run into issues which arise the need for this other guide of mine.

If you like to learn more about patching process you can check the explaining post here

(applicable for patch#4 and above)
2. Verifying Integrity of Game Files
Why should I do this?
In more than 93% of all cases everything goes well. The last < 7% might have issues with the download. To be on the safe side, remember to verify your game files after downloading the update.

Yes, the game does that verification automatically. But sometimes the automatic functions do not trigger a new download despite it is needed. I have experienced that myself in the past when updating games. I have noticed that the verification failed, and it attempted a re-download, but it did not. Only after I triggered the verification manually Steam did a re-download of one essential file. Otherwise my game would not have started properly.

That is why I recommend you to do it manually after you finished updating your game.

Right-click on the game in your Steam Library -> select Properties

Go to the Local Files tab and select Verify integrity of game files

Do not forget to restart your PC after applying the update.
You might be surprised how important that little detail might be. That simple action already solves so many problems, it is hilarious that it gets overlooked more often than you can imagine.

The thing is: services can get stuck over time.
When services of your operating system get stuck, they might become unable to load essential things like drivers how they normally do. Even if they worked flawless half an hour ago. An update is still a change on your PC to a certain degree which can trigger a service getting stuck randomly.

It is basically like paper jam with your printer.
You can have it go well forever and ever, and sometimes it just happens.
And the longer you go without a manual restart, the more likely it can happen.
A regular shutdown and turning on again will not do nowadays (because of Windows "feature").
3. Repair Steam Library
In rare cases the verification of files integrity might not suffice.
Then you level it up by triggering a Steam Library Repair

Open Steam Settings from the main menu of Steam

Go to the Storage tab, select the drive on which your game is installed, then pick the Repair Folder option from the menu (the three dots "...")

4. Delete Cache
Make sure to restart your PC before you continue, as we will also address the OS's TEMP folder

===================================================

Go to

%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\LevelCache

and delete the whole content of that folder.

For your convenience, you can copy & paste the link above into the address bar of your Windows Explorer, as shown in this screenshot:

Go to

%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios

and delete the Launcher folder.

Go to

%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\

and delete there everything except PlayerProfiles folder

Go to

%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\

and delete there all files except for the folders.

Go to

%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public

and delete there everything except for the Savegames folder

Go to

%temp%

and delete there everything what can be deleted

Next we trigger the Launcher's Crash Reporter to help the launcher from being stuck.

Right-click on the game's entry in your Steam Library -> Manage -> Browse local files

Go into the Launcher folder

Start CrashReporter.exe via double-click or ENTER

You do not need to enter and send any information. You can already close that window again. All we wanted is just to trigger it, in order to unstuck the Launcher from anything which might have disabled it from working properly.

If you have any other issues with the Launcher, use this

Better would be if you do not use the Launcher at all

If you still experience issues after this delete shader cache and reset the game as described here
