The purpose of this guide is to provide an alternative nightmare experience by utilizing undocumented/unintended mechanisms, aka "Hacks".
Dont panic, you do not need to study IT, use a hexeditor or download a disassembler, nope, all you need is
  • your eyes (to read this guide),
  • a mouse (not mickey, the computer mouse), controller might work as well,
  • your hands (in case of a mouse, actually one hand, right or left, doesnt matter),
  • the game itself, of course

The Campain "Hack"
Background:
As anyone know, the game has a nightmare setting which is available in campain-mode. BUT, hosting a nightmare-campain provides only two player-slots, means, the players able to play a coop-nightmare-campain are limited to yourself as the host and someone else, your teammate. Wouldnt it be nice to share that nightmare-experience with a full squad, your friends, to bring superior devastation to the dead army?

Here is how you accomplish this:
0. start the game
1. in main menu hit "CAMPAIN"
2. in campain menu hit "HOST"
3. in "HOST COOP GAME" screen hit "ENEMY SETUP"
4. and select "NIGHTMARE"
5. at the same screen hit "GAME MODE"
6. and choose "HORDE"
7. at the same screen hit "ENEMY SETUP" (dont change anything)
8. then hit "PLAYER SLOT", the most right slots should be closed, if not, close them
9. hit "CREATE GAME"
10. in the "LOBBY" go to the "GAME SETUP" screen
11. and change "GAME MODE" to "CAMPAIN"
12. you may have noticed that "ENEMY SETUP" had changed to "NIGHTMARE" after
completing step 11., if yes you're still on track,
if not, you're forced by yourself to start over again at step 1.
13. go back to the "LOBBY" screen
14. and open the closed slots

Congratulations, you are now able to host a full squad coop nightmare campain.
The Horde "Hack"
Same principle, but a bit more tricky.

Background:
Now that we've seen we can host a full squad coop nightmare campain, question is: Is it possible for "HORDE"-mode too? Answer is YES (as u guess); but consider, in campain we have a "BUILT-IN" nightmare mode, in "HORDE"-mode its not selectable at all. Reason for this, most probably: PERFORMANCE. Nightmare-mode can stress your hardware to limits (especially GPU). If your hardware has minor problems in "normal" game-modes, it is most likely to have serious problems in nightmare-mode, especially in "HORDE"-nightmare. As a workaround, u can try to lower your graphic settings.

Anyway, lets assume you and your hardware can handle it:
0. host and start a nightmare campain (map is irrelevant):
same procedure as in 'The Campain "Hack"' steps 0-4., hit create and start
1. right in the game, notice the pentagram in the upper right corner:
wait for the "SAVING PROFILE"-notification to disappear
2. blend in your steam-overlay screen and perform a "hard" exit, confirm
3. restart the game, hit "CAMPAIN", hit "HOST",
hit "CREATE GAME" (dont change anything)
4. you're in the "LOBBY", hit "GAME SETUP", change "GAME MODE" to "HORDE"
and hit "DONE"
5. you're in the "LOBBY", hit "GAME SETUP", change "GAME MODE" to "CAMPAIN"
and hit "DONE"
6. you're in the "LOBBY", hit "LEAVE" and confirm with "YES"
7. you're back in "HOST COOP GAME" screen, change "ENEMY SETUP" to something
non-nightmare, like "4 PLAYERS"
8. hit "PLAYER SLOT", the most right slots should be closed, if not,
close them, then hit "CREATE GAME"
9. you're back in the "LOBBY", hit "GAME SETUP",
change "GAME MODE" to "HORDE" and hit "DONE"
10. open the closed slots

Congratulations, you did the impossible, hosted a horde game in nightmare mode with a 4 player setup.

Conclusion
Finally its up to you which mode you prefer, what your hardware can take and what you can handle. In general, when a zombie appears right from behind and your shrill scream causes to shatter every window in your home, avoid nightmare, if you think of "normal"-mode be like walking over green meadows hand in hand with zombies, nightmare horde is for you.
Note that nightmare mode is not a difficulty setting, so you're still able to ease it a bit by selecting "EASY" or "MEDIUM" in the "DIFFICULTY"-section.
