During the 1980's and the 90's, the V-22 was designed to carry out a variety of missions including transporting troops and equipment, inserting and retrieving special operations units and search and rescue

With a aim of having greater speed and range than a conventional helicopter and greater maneuverability than fixed wing aircraft.

The V-22 Osprey is a remarkable tiltrotor aircraft that has revolutionized vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, as well as advanced aerial mobility for military forces. Its development is the result of a collaboration between Bell Helicopter, now known as Bell Textron, and Boeing. In the early 1980s, the United States Department of Defense sought to improve its vertical lift capabilities, particularly for the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Special Operations Forces.
