Torpedoes are a very damaging weapon and ignore armor and all that crap. Torpedoes can get as far to the back line if their isn't enough ships in the next line, and the same for the line after that. This is called screening efficiency. If you don't have a lot of destroyers covering your front line then your capital ships can get torpedo'd, and your carriers after that. So if you spam out a bunch of roaches the torpedoes can't get past the front line.
