Simon Metz, more commonly known as Schlitzie Surtees or simply Schlitzie, was a remarkable individual who gained fame as a sideshow performer during the early 20th century. Bertram is first encountered in the Old Light Saloon at Van Horn Trading Post where he can be seen acting in a most peculiar way. Bertram seemingly gets angry and attacks the bartender for removing a bottle of alcohol from him.

After losing a fist fight, Miss Marjorie comforts a crying Bertram and asks him where the third part of their trio, the dwarf Magnifico, ran off to. While being resistant to answer the question at first, he eventually tells Marjorie that their fellow performer is hiding in the woods.

After Magnifico is found by Arthur and chased for a period of time, Miss Marjorie and Bertram appear. Bertram will hug Magnifico and state that he missed him, to which Magnifico will push him away. The three then ride away after Miss Marjorie encourages Arthur to watch their show in Saint Denis and states she will pay him a share for his help.

Bertram, alongside with Miss Marjorie and Magnifico can eventually be seen in a show in the Théâtre Râleur. Marjorie introduces Bertram, who flexes his muscles. She challenges someone to come up to fight him to prove his strength, to which an overconfident man in the theater will come up onto the stage to challenge him. Although eventually hesitant, the man punches Bertram after being led on by his friends. However, he will bring his hand back in pain as Bertram continues flexing his arms. After a second time, the man successfully hurts Bertram, who steps back slightly in pain.

As the man celebrates hurting the giant, Bertram grabs the man's head with his hands. Before he can do any severe damage, however, Miss Marjorie will berate him, calling him bad, and Bertram will let the pained man go. When the man angrily shouts at Miss Marjorie, Bertram will grab him again, much to her chagrin, and hold him above his head as Miss Marjorie whips him and berates him in an attempt to get him to stop. Before he can do anymore, Magnifico will appear and use a spell to stun Bertram and get him to drop the man on his command. Bertram will continue standing in the middle of the stage stunned until the curtain closes.
