The Pac-Man games have a large border around the play area, making the play area small, some smaller than others.
Pac-man Battle Royale for instance has an annoyingly small play area.

Let's fix that!

How to maximize the play area

In order to maximize the play area we'll use the Windows Magnifier which is installed on Windows by default.

Confuring the Windows Magnifier app:
Windows logo key + Plus sign (+)  to start the magnifier app.
Click the cog wheel and go to settings.
Change the "Zoom Step" to something low (e.g. 5% or 10%) in order to have better control of the zoom level.
Optional: Disable "Edge smoothing" as it doesn't work well on all zoom levels.
Optional: Disable follow mouse

Keyboard shortcuts to zoom in and out:
Windows logo key + Plus sign (+) zooms in.
Windows logo key + Minus sign (-) zooms out.

Getting the zoom centered:
When zooming in with the keyboard shortcuts, it zooms in on where the mouse is. Conveniently the game centers the mouse automatically when the game starts. If you have moved your mouse after starting the game the zoom will not be centered. Re-center the mouse by Alt+ Tab to another application and Alt+ Tab back to the game. Zoom out all the way and zoom in again. The zoom should now be centered.

Alternative solution for Pac-man Battle Royale

The border around Pac-man Battle Royale has been removed in Pac-man Museum+, so it's possible to buy that and get a better experience:

There's no discount for Pac-Man Museum owners though.

The link to the mod download is currently unavailable and the mod on GitHub is mentioned to have issues and be unstable. I tried the dgvoodoo fix mentioned on pc gaming wiki to get a higher resolution but I didn’t experience a big improvement in how that software stretches the graphics compared to how the screen does it and the windows magnifier didn’t work as well with dgvoodo. Tried in both full screen and windowed and had issues with both.

I’ll leave this guide as is. At least the magnifier solution works.

I think I tried both mods a while back, it doesn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure the original arcade doesn't even run at a 1080p resolution anyways.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I found it on GitHub but it refers to this mod: https://www.emuline.org/topic/1252-tuto-ameliorations-pac-man-battle-royale/page/1/

I’ll try it later and report back.

I also found a resolution fix via PC Gaming Wiki. Not sure if the mod mentioned above also enables higher resolutions. If not I’ll try to combine them.

There's a mod that removes the border for Battle Royale. I'm pretty sure its on github
