Fixing SR2: A Comprehensive Guide.
By uzis
We all know the troubling issues with this god-forsaken port. Even on a NASA Super Computer its hard to enjoy this game to its full potential. With the "NEW SR2 PATCH" being announced in October 2019 and still not being released (due to IdolNinja's sad and unfortunate passing, rest in peace, and whatever else the rest of the patch team are doing with it.) i decided to create this little guide on what has helped me experience this amazing game to a near console experience, I hope this helps and i hope you enjoy!

Links to all software and mods will be at the bottom of the thread.

Cutscene Character/Object Sync Issues
So first off, as you may notice Cut scenes are jank as all hell. the higher and more unstable your fps is the less sync the objects and characters will have in Cut scenes. I've managed to hit a sweet spot in capping my fps to where its stable and smooth as butter. I currently have my game fps set to 55 by NVIDIA Control Panel. I also have DXVK (x32) installed so the fps is as stable as can be. What i can recommend dearly is to first install DXVK (x32) make sure it IS infact the 32 bit version as that is the version SR2 needs. What i would then recommend is trying to find your FPS capping sweet spot. To cap your fps, use MSI Afterburner [www.msi.com], NVIDIA Control Panel or your AMD Driver Software. Any one of these should get the job done and they should provide documentation on how to cap game fps in any game, otherwise there should be easy to follow tutorials on how to do so online. once you find your sweet spot for cut scene sync-age, you are golden. Mine is 55 FPS, yours could be too. its all trial and error.
Hair and Other Transparency Issues
Turn your games Anti-aliasing ON. Any setting works. You may notice that on SR2 pc the Transparency on character hair is all types of bad. THIS IS THE REASON WHY. i genuinely didn't understand why transparency blending is connected to anti aliasing but there's the fix. i have my anti aliasing on 2x.

Hair Transparency with Anti-Aliasing off

Hair Transparency with Anti-Aliasing on

this even affects the boss' hair.
Speedup/Slowdown Issues
If you experience any issues with game speedup or slowdown i would highly recommend using SR2 Powertools. [www.saintsrowmods.com]
this allows you to alter the games speed so you can get it back to normal.
Addressing Bad Audio Quality
You'll also tend to notice that Audio sounds really really reeeeaaaalllyy bad. There are two amazing mods to fix this, Though they don't fix absolutely every sound in the game, they fix A LOT of them and makes the playing experience less painful. both of them are: SR2 Improved Audio [www.saintsrowmods.com] & High Quality Radio Mod [www.saintsrowmods.com]
Patched .exe and Gentlemen of the Row
There is also a custom modified exec made which also tweaks the game ever further and fixes online servers. The EXEC is re-routed to use Open-spy Servers instead of Game-spy, this EXEC also is patched to be able to use 4GB of virtual memory, the OG exec uses 2GB of virtual memory due to being inherently 32-Bit from 2008, while the exec is still 32-Bit its pre-patched to be able to use 4GB, this was done using https://ntcore.com/?page_id=371 . Here is the link to the exec: Updated Executable file. [drive.google.com]

Last but not least the infamous Gentlemen of the Row. [www.saintsrowmods.com] This fixes a lot of the crashing issues, adds new features on request and does a lot more. Be weary though, if you are looking for a plain vanilla experience be weary about downloading GOTR, even if you choose no additional extras it will change some stuff in the game that won't represent the vanilla game. although these changes are minor they exist and you will notice them if you are a vanilla game freak, GOTR ALSO MAY OR MAY NOT BE COMPATIBLE WITH PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED MODS

Installation path does not matter, it's the specs of the installation media that does matter. Installing on an SSD is going to have very quick loading times. :papyrus:

@jimbo

Old comment so you probably figured this out already but if not, or if someone else is having this issue and sees this;

Saints Row 2 can *only* be installed on your C: drive or it won't load past 5%.

I did as you said, and while in game audio works, cutscene audio doesn't play for some reason.

Idk what to tell you, I have never had issues with loading, even on the vanilla pc port.
Honestly try using a 360 or ps3 emulator.

Thank you, good tips. But I can't even start installing the GotR mod... When I click the bat file, a tiny black window pops up for a second and immediately closes, and nothing else happens. Any tips on how to get it running?

It really is about luck, even with GotR, although t's not a worry, as you said I save quite often. The only thing that's a bummer and I didn't notice as a kid is the draw distance: you get into a fight, look back then turn back on them again, and they're already gone. First time a performance system dumps down the experience for me. Although SR2 rocks and I have to beat it this time.

Some crashes can be resolved by downloading Gentlemen of the Row, there are quite a few that still aren't covered by it though. Your best bet is to save after any major in-game event (a large gunfight or chase, whatever it is) and/or after every mission or second mission, just in-case the game crashes. I played a whole playthrough without Gentlemen of the Row and only ran into 2 crashes the entire playthrough. it depends on luck with these crashes tbh
