Spawn in, jump. Slavers demand I send a crew as tribute. Laugh raucously as I draw straws to hand over my only crew to an instant game over.
Best. Run. Ever. Lmao.
I had the luck to even have a Defense II drone.
Thank you for your guides. They are great.
Ah! My apologies. So I outline that quandary in the Kestrel guide (as I noticed it was a recurring theme in my shopping list). Basically, one of the dangerous factors in Wave 1 is the enemy Hacking Drone, which can end a run if it cripples something key - especially as they seem to have infinite hacking drones so will keep launching them even if you shoot one down. As such, unless you are quite fortunate, I tended to find you needed a hard counter: Either your own hacking drone (most reliable) or a good collection of bombs try and keep it offline. There might be other angles, but for these guides I tried to stick to the simplest counters possible.

Haha thank you, but I cannot take much credit for that. Poodka's guide got me on the right track

On man... that's both rough but kinda funny. First beacon as well!
>Start up a new run with layout B
>Follow guide's instructions about the drones and venting the ship
>Jump to first beacon
>Get event where space station has faint life signatures aboard
>Decide to take the risk and try to get some more crew
>Get event where crewmember gets infected and dies
>Lose the run immediately due to lack of crew
So the only thing to beware of there is: If your drone room gets stalled for any reason or it gets distracted by the triple missiles - it might sneak through, at which point the drones won't be able to do anything about it if one lands
Defense drones don't JUST shoot down missiles, they also shoot down Hacking drones, Boarding drones, and Flack... repeating this for emphasis:
THEY SHOOT DOWN HACKING DRONES.
This makes defense drones a cheap and effective alternative to a hacking module for the final fight (with Engi A/B ships) and a more expensive, but more versatile solution for any ship that does not start with drone bays.
