What is this guide?
Hello all!

My name is Frostipanda and this is my guide on how to export maps from Chronos Builder into your Foundry VTT settings. I have been playing around with Chronos since day one of its Alpha release and have learned how to use this program inside and out.

The most common things I see in forums and on Discord is "How do I import my map? My grid is not aligned! How do I load in my wall and light data?" etc. So today I'm going to be answering all of those questions in this quick and easy guide.

Please note this is for Foundry VTT I am not sure how to do this on other tabletop programs, if I find the time I'll play around with them and see if I can write up a guide on other tabletop programs as well but for now I only use Foundry.
Getting things ready in Chronos
Exporting a map in Chronos for Foundry VTT is as simple as 1. 2. 3.

The first thing you want to do (Other than creating your map...) Is going to be to click the Export icon in the top right side of your screen.

Once you have export open you want to select VTT
Then you're going to want to change it from universal, to Foundry
Choose what resolution you want the map to be exported at
Then select "Bake and Export Lights"

Finally, hit Export and choose where you want to save the .json and .png from the export.

It's that simple for Chronos Builder, now we're going to move over to Foundry VTT!
Uploading map data to Foundry VTT
Alright you have your map made and exported but what is a json file?

The .json file is the file that contains all of the code for your map including
  • Size
  • Lighting
  • Walls
  • General Map info (Like its name)

Lets go ahead and get started by creating a new scene in Foundry by going to the Scenes Tab then Create Scene

Keep the name as "New Scene" for now since the .json will fix this later.

Now we're going to right click the newly created scene and choose Import Data

A new menu will pop up asking you to select a file, now you're just going to navigate to where you told Chronos to export your map and select the generated .json file.

Congrats you have imported all of your map data, you will now see the scenes name change to whatever your maps name was in Chronos.

You can see here, mine changed to [Panda] Cyberpunk Warehouse so we know the data was imported successfully!

However the map hasn't been assigned to the scene yet so currently its just a blank map with some walls and lighting data. Lets go ahead and get that png imported.

Start by Right Clicking the scene and choosing the option "Configure"

When the configuration window pops up you will see a Background Image option with a file icon beside it. Go ahead and click on the file icon.

Click the choose file button near the bottom of the new window and locate your png that was exported with the json file. This will upload the file into your Foundry VTT and set it as the map background.

Wrapping up and notes
That's it, you did it!

You have successfully uploaded your map and all map related data into Foundry VTT.
Before I say that is the end of this guide here are a couple things to note.

Chrono's Builder is still working on making every aspect of the program better, that being said this import feature isn't perfect.

You may find yourself needing to fix one wall that didn't get placed right, or a missing light that didn't get generated.

The two things you'll find is that the grid is "SLIGHTLY" off center, honestly its almost not even noticeable on smaller maps but on larger maps like this one the farther you get away from the center the more the grid is unaligned. I normally just leave the grid turned on in Foundry but make it completely transparent so tokens still snap to the squares and its so small of a difference my players have never noticed.

You will also notice the quality on larger maps is not the best when zoomed in like this screenshot here. This has been brought up to the developers and they mentioned in a recent news update that they are working on fixing this in updates to come so hopefully by the time your exporting maps this will be resolved.

Here is the comparison picture they used to show off what the new exports will look like.

Honestly a night and day difference!

Anyways that's the end of the guide, please join the Chronos Builder Discord server if you have any issues with the exporting of maps and report any bugs you encounter, the developers are working hard to iron out any issues but they can't find them all without your help.
