Crowbar Collective added a new UI to Black Mesa in 2020 when they released the definitive edition. Don't like it? I will show you how to simply re-enable the old one.

New vs Old UI

The old UI was almost the same as in other source games like Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but just darker and more settings.

How To Enable The Classic Source UI

To start, go to black mesa on your library and right click. Press properties.

Stay in General. In Launch Options, type in -oldgameui

After that, press enter. When you launch Black Mesa you will have the classic Source UI.

How to Disable The Classic Source UI

Remove -oldgameui from Launch Options.

Thanks for this guide, it hadn't occurred to me that you could just switch back to the classic UI. Honestly, it should be an option in the menu. I really don't like the new UI, it looks "cheap" and things are unnecessarily spread out across various tabs etc. Also, in the advanced graphics options menu, the classic Source interface actually lets you see what all the options are (whether they go to "High" or "Very high", for example) instead of making you scroll through each one to see how far they go. When using the default UI, I also got multiple crashes when trying to change video settings, but I don't know if switching back to the old interface actually helps or if I just got unlucky.
