Getting Gothic 1 to Work in 2022
By GrandmaKeys TTV
I tried a lot of solutions on the internet that I could find and I could not get any of them to work. Hopefully this guide helps you if you are suffering from black screen (audio only), crashes, application being denied, and the X: XD3D_InitPerDX: Can't create D3DX context! Error. DDERR_UNSUPPORT error. I have an Nvidia graphics card so the guide is based on that, but I am sure by disabling all your AMD Radeon settings, the same way as Nvidia, it may work.

Clean Install
If you tried a bunch of mods and fixes my recommendation is to completely uninstall and have a fresh clean install of Gothic 1
Disable Steam Overlay
Steam Overlay likes to cause issues some times with older games. Make sure you disable it on the steam settings under Gothic I.

Gothic.Ini File
You will copy and paste the Gothic.Ini File from your system file onto anywhere you want in your PC(you can find it depending on where you download your steam library):

For me its located in:
E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Gothic\system

The reason for this is that some people report the file goes back to its previous settings after you log off the game. I on the other hand have not had this problem, but I do have it saved as a back up on my desktop just in case.

You will open the Gothic. Ini File and look for the following:
scaleVideos=1

Change it to scaleVideos=0

Then locate the following:

zVidResFullscreenX=1366
zVidResFullscreenY=768
zVidResFullscreenBPP=32

Always keep zVidResFullscreenBPP=32 as zVidResFullscreenBPP=32
If yours says zVidResFullscreenBPP=16 then change it to zVidResFullscreenBPP=32

The ZVidResFullscreenX and Y are your monitors current resolution. Both these numbers must match your monitors resolution. Example, My monitor is set to 3840 x 2160 so I will change zVidResFullscreenX=1366 to zVidResFullscreenX=3840 and zVidResFullscreenY=768 to zVidResFullscreenY=2160. These may display a different number, just make sure it matches your resolution.

Once you are done, save and copy and paste the Gothic.Ini file back into the E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Gothic\system (or where ever the game is saved for you).
If it ask you to replace, agree!
Nvidia Settings
The important part of this guide is to open up your Nvidia settings

Go under 3D settings > Manage 3D settings and then select the 'Program Settings" Tab.

1. Select a program to customize: press the Add button and add Gothic 1 (Gothicmod.exe)
2. Specify the settings for this program:
Turn everything off. Only settings to NOT touch is the following:
  • CUDA - GPUs
  • Monitor Technology
  • OpenGL Rendering GPU
  • Power Management Mode
  • Preferred Refresh Rate
  • Texture Filtering - (all of them)
  • Vertical sync
  • Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames

This is what my Nvidia Settings look like.
javascript:InsertSelected()
By doing it this way we are only affecting the Gothic game and no other programs or games on the computer.
Before you Start Gothicmod.exe
Before you start the game make sure you have it on compatibility mode Windows XP (Service Pack 3):

Now you can start the game by making sure you select the correct .exe file which should be Gothicmod.exe

This is what worked for me and hopefully it will work for you.
