This may come as a shock - but a closed door can save lives.

In January of 2022, 17 people in New York lost their lives[www.nytimes.com] due to the failure of a closing door. Closed doors save lives on a regular basis.[closeyourdoor.org] Now your pawns can sleep soundly as the raging flames beat against their barracks.

This mod simply adjusts the Flammability factor of doors from 100% to 50%. What this means is, any door that inherits flammability from a material has that value cut in half.

For example, Wood drops from 100% to 50% - effectively halving the rate a wooden door contributes to your base burning down (walls not affected - don't build wooden walls, KAYEDON).

Steel drops from 40% to 20%, unless you use a cheaty mod that reduces steel burn rate to 0%, as if chemfuel can't melt steel beams.

Anyway, that's all from me today. Enjoy this mod sandwiched between an endless slew of 1.4 updates - and yes, it does work on previous versions, but move on.

Probably.

Q: Would this mod work for those of us still playing RimWorld 1.3? I mean, this mod works with a simple .XML patch operation, right?

i think that 1000C molten steel covered in evaporating chemfuel would probably set a couple things on fire emailman

Okay y'all, the description is meant as a joke. Thanks for playing along. I ain't gonna change it.

I do understand the difference between burning and melting - sadly, RimWorld does not (yet!). I do not have the skills to design this. So accept a bit of tongue-in-cheek narrative in a video game that doesn't perfectly emulate everything related to thermodynamics.

That said, as this mod is designed, a close door (even made of wood) can SLOW the spread of an indoor fire, I wanted to bring knowledge of this life-saving fact to the Rim in the best way I could - which was designing doors to be slightly more resistant to fire.

Back to the point of steel - I totally agree with Akkadon! The description is, again, a joke. Thanks all.

First of all, very cool mod.

Second of all, there's a big difference between burning and melting. Let's say you cover a steel wall in a whole bunch of chemfuel. Okay. Sure. It might melt. That doesn't mean it's burning or that the fire will spread along the steel to the rest of the building. Steel requires very specific circumstances to combust which are simply not present in the vast majority of cases.

chemfuel or charcoal, probably even lots of wood can melt iron in an enclosed environment under certain circumstances. It has to be 1.538 °C An iron wall standing in the woods wouldn't melt ever.

If the game differentiated between a forest fire and a chemfuel fire, I'd agree with you on the steel beams. Until then I'll keep my non-burning metal walls and doors, thank you very much. That being said, I prefer using stone for walls anyway, no matter the tech level.
