Preparations
Before you begin down this long, arduous road you will require the following:
  • A text dump of all lines spoken by both Xelpud and Mulbruk. This text dump is essential for keeping track of what has/hasn't been triggered in game. Printing this out and manually crossing each line out one by one is strongly recommended. You can find this at the La Mulana Remake Wiki[lamulana-remake.wikia.com]

  • A clean slate. Start from scratch with a new playthrough. It doesn't matter how well you think you remember what you have/haven't triggered before, you will forget something.

  • A clear mind. Even with the help of this guide, keeping track of everything can be very confusing.

  • Patience. Due to the nature of how the game is structured you may need multiple playthroughs to unlock literally every piece of dialogue from Xelpud and Mulbruk.

  • Experience with the game. You will need to be relatively familiar with the game as a whole to understand this guide. At least one full playthrough is very highly recommended before attempting this.
Dialogue Trigger Overview
La Mulana uses a peculiar system for triggering dialogue. It keeps track of invisible points in the background which tick up when the player gains a non-consumable item, defeats a boss, or moves the plot forward. These points in turn correspond to specific lines of dialogue from Xelpud and Mulbruk. However, this is not true for all lines. Some are instead triggered by posessing certain items when talking to them. These criteria will both be covered further on in the guide along with others.
Hidden Point System (Plot Triggers)
Now that you know of the system's existence, how does one go about manipulating it? Before I provide the values required for each line I must first explain in detail what affects your score and what doesn't, as it's somewhat inconsistent.

Something of major importance is the fact that advancing the plot modifies your preexisting score to a new one, regardless of how high your score was before. In addition, your score will be capped at certain values until you advance the plot. What this means for you is that you should be conservative with how quickly you gain items while playing. If you gain items while at a score cap, those points will be wasted and unusable in the future. By the same token however, you can never lower your score to below what the plot trigger set it to (due to it forcing a new score on you regardless of your prior one) so you should make sure you've actually gotten all the dialogue you can before proceeding.

The plot triggers, the values they force and the point caps that are enforced can be found in the following table:

Plot Trigger
Point Value
Point Cap
Game Start
0
99
2nd Conversation with Xelpud*
12 (Up + Down)
99
Waking up Mulbruk
50 (Up only)
99
Killing Viy**
100 (Up only)
149
Acquiring the Mulana Talisman***
150 (Up + Down)
199
Killing 8th Guardian
200 (Up + Down)
255
Completing the LAMULANA Mantra
230 (Up + Down)
255

* This refers to the conversation you have immediately after gaining xmailer.exe

** If for example you have a score of 96, you will recieve a score of 104. This is due to the extra points from killing Viy (8) and the fact that the game doesn't force the score down in this particular case.

*** Make sure to talk to Xelpud immediately after recieving the talisman to gain a unique piece of dialogue regarding it in addition to forcing the value to 150 without being robbed of valuable points in the future. (Talking to him while holding the talisman forces the value to 150 again, which can disastrous if you've been busy collecting items beforehand.)

In addition, each event listed here triggers dialogue independent of the point system. Visit Xelpud and Mulbruk as soon as you can when you trigger these events.
Hidden Point System (Items)
This where things get murky. Most items do count towards your total score, but others have absolutely no effect at all; giving you no points. While not strictly items, mantra tablets still earn you +2 points when they first flash into existence. The only exception to this is the fourth mantra tablet in Inferno Cavern, which adds 0 to your score.

OTHER

No maps or Sacred Orbs count towards your point total, so they have been omitted entirely.
Hidden Point System (Bosses)
MINIBOSSES

All minibosses in this section award you +2 points. However not all minibosses in the entire game award you points. Those that do award you points will be listed in the table below.

GUARDIANS

Most guardians award you +8 points when you kill them. The only exceptions are Viy (fifth boss) and the eighth guardian you kill. Viy has already been explained above. The eighth guardian you kill forces your total score to 200, regardless of your previous score.

Xelpud's Dialogue Triggers
SCORE

Now that you now know exactly what affects your score, its time to learn which values to reach in order to trigger dialogue so that you can learn the context for those numbers given earlier. The following lines will not be full quotes, just small snippets to reference the line. They will be shown in the table below, along with the corresponding value required to trigger it. Sets of lines that are triggered by a wide range of values at the same time will not be listed, but instead grouped together, as they are themselves triggered in groups when the desired value is reached.

Point Value(s) Required
Random Set A*
16-18, 26-44, 52-68

* When you fall within one of the point ranges for a random set, simply talk to Xelpud over and over again until you are certain he has exhausted all available random dialogue. After this you will not need to worry about random dialogue again until you encounter values that fall within the range of the next set.

ITEMS

When trying to trigger dialogue mentioning active items, equip them before talking to Xelpud. You only need to possess any passive items that are required. The items that trigger dialogue are listed below.

  • Hand Scanner
  • Pepper
  • Mini Doll
  • Woman Statue*
  • Maternity Statue
  • Serpent Staff
  • Key of Eternity
  • Lamp of Time (Charged)
  • Talisman
  • Diary
  • Mulana Talisman
  • Dragon Bone
  • Cog of the Soul
  • Magatama Jewel**
  • Vessel
  • Djed Pillar**

* This is missable if you transform it into the maternity statue before talking to Xelpud.

** When you gain either of these items and present one to Xelpud for a line of dialogue, you can not trigger the dialogue for the other unless you either load an earlier save file or start another playthrough.

EMAILS

Some of Xelpud's dialogue can be triggered by receiving certain emails. Run back to Xelpud when you receive them. They are listed below:

  • Email 18
  • Email 25
  • Email 43

HELL TEMPLE

I have some bad news. You must complete Hell Temple if you want all the dialogue to be unlocked. Dialogue is triggered during the unlocking process and after you have claimed your prize at the end. The conditions that must be met to trigger the dialogue are listed below:

  • Talk to Xelpud while its dark (Step 5 of the unlocking process)
  • Wear your prize and speak to Xelpud (Be sure to do this after you have triggered the dialogue for a 200+ score)

*Apply the same you caution here as you did with Xelpud's dialogue. However, there is one line that is shared between all of Mulbruk's sets. The line follows thusly:

"Mulbruk sleeping right now. Don't wake me. Stop it!"

ITEMS

When trying to trigger dialogue mentioning active items, equip them before talking to Mulbruk. You only need to possess any passive items that are required. The items that trigger dialogue are listed below.

  • Woman Statue*
  • Philosopher's Ocarina

* This is missable if you transform it into the maternity statue before talking to Mulbruk.

CONTEXTUAL HINTS

Throughout the game Mulbruk will offer hints on certain areas / the puzzles founds therein. These hints count towards the dialogue total. A list of areas / puzzles she can give hints for can be found below:

  • Inferno Cavern (Don't collect Ice Cape until you have triggered this)
  • Chamber of Extinction (Don't permanently light up until you have triggered this)
  • Endless Corridor
  • Twin Labyrinth's broken elevator (Don't fix until you have triggered this)
  • Chamber of Extinction's mantra.exe wall (Requires upgraded laptop [Don't scan until you have triggered this])
  • Tower of the Goddess (Don't reach the Grail tablet at the summit until you have triggered this)
  • Chamber of Birth Part 1
  • Chamber of Birth Part 2

To be safe, check back continuously with Mulbruk when you encounter these levels / puzzles. You can be locked out of dialogue if you aren't careful.

MISC

These lines are triggered independent of points or items while not falling under other categories. A list of what is required to trigger them can be found below:

  • Talk with Mulbruk while she's petrified
  • Talk with Mulbruk immediately after you've freed her
  • Talk with Mulbruk after you have encountered Anubis and attempted to hit him at least once. (You will receive the Book of the Dead for this in addition to triggering a line of dialogue.)

HELL TEMPLE

Completing Hell Temple is required for triggering all of Mulbruk's dialogue as well. Dialogue is triggered before the unlocking process, during the unlocking process and after you have claimed your prize at the end. The conditions that must be met to trigger the dialogue are listed below:

  • Talk to Mulbruk after you have defeated all eight guardians. (This starts the unlocking process)
  • Talk to Mulbruk immediately after the above conversation. (Before completing the first step of the unlocking process.
  • After the first step, talk to Mulbruk again. (She should mention a statue unrelated to puzzles)
  • After completing the tenth and final step in unlocking Hell Temple, speak with Mulbruk again.
  • Talk to Mulbruk with your prize after beating Hell Temple.
The End
Hopefully, by the end of your journey you should have triggered every single line of dialogue from both Xelpud and Mulbruk. Congratulations are in order if that is the case. Seriously, these are a tough couple of achievements to pull off. Kudos.

If you happened to not quite get it this time around, there's nothing left to do but either load an early save or start again from scratch.
Credit
I would like to make it abdundantly clear that I did not figure out the point system myself. All the information on the point system was sourced from the Steam forum posts of Vilurum. All I have done is consolidate the information contained in his forum posts in this guide. He deserves full credit for the actual information here. I merely wanted to make this information easier to find and read through, as it was pure coincidence that I myself stumbled upon his posts, which are spread over several threads.

Additional information was sourced from the La Mulana Remake Wiki[lamulana-remake.wikia.com]
And Finally...
Please don't hesitate to tell me about spelling errors, incorrect grammar and missing/wrong information. It's only natural that I would make a few mistakes when typing up a guide this dense in information.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you for this!

It might be worth adding that you can check how many points you have accumulated by opening your save file in a hex editor and looking at offset 0x8C. You need to either understand hexadecimal or use an online hex to decimal converter.

Thank you so much for this guide. I managed to get Xelpud's a while back, but have had a lot of trouble unlocking Mulbruk's. As it turns out, the one I was missing was "Mulbruk is still sleepy". On that note, I think the point values here are incorrect: I got "Mulbruk is sleepy" for 50-54, and didn't get "Mulbruk is still sleepy" until I got to 56.

I was till yesterday on the search for the last check of the Mulbruk achievement, which was my last achievement to do.

I've gone through every check again and I was missing one check and that of course was Hell Temple, because every good run ends with Hell Temple (looking at you La-Mulana 2).

It was the hint about the statue while unlocking Hell Temple.
Thank you very much for every help that I've got from these guides and I am finally done with this.

The game was a solid 11/10, while always in calculated pain crafted by the developers I had my fun for 5 long years to finish this and it's sequel 100%.

Whoever reads this, I wish you a wonderful day.

Steam tracks triggered dialogue across your account. If your worried about the Talisman convo with Xelpud ruining your point cap you can just reload your game.
Iido 11 Oct, 2022 @ 11:31am
I'm also having an issue with the Talisman. Showing it to Xelpud isn't increasing my points to 150, I'm still only in the 130s since he's talking about writing an email and Mulbruk is talking about the hidden power of the grail.
Obilisk 8 Mar, 2020 @ 1:30pm
Btw, I suspect this guide is a bit incorrect about the "Killing Viy" threshold. I believe it is actually something like "Kill your 5th boss".

Also, it may be that the "Kill your 5th boss" and "Acquiring the Mulana Talisman" are not a specific order, but whichever one you complete first raises your cap to 149, then the second completed raises your cap to 199.

(posting here in case anyone else runs into issues trying to follow the guide like I did)

After so much tries from a save before Shrine of Mother, I finally managed to get the last dialogue ("Mother powers are weakening") but to get it, you end up missing the "Fifth Children" dialogue (but I already got it in another playthrough).

I thank you ([ A U R A ] and Virilum) for it. These were the most complex archievements I ever did! Timing the points got from the items/events was very complicated but it worked in the end!

btw: I though that my last line was "Mother is weakening", but it wasn't - my true last dialogue was "Mulbruk is skeepy" easily missable...!

THANKS AGAIN! :steamhappy:

Not ALL Mantras gives 2 points. BIRTH and DEATH mantras give 0 points (both).
Uncia 2 Jul, 2019 @ 4:35am
Something doesn't seem to be accurate here anymore... I picked up the Mulana Talisman yesterday as well as talking to Xelpud about it (and getting his Mulana Talisman line), and I'm still getting Mulbruk set A randoms and/or her talking about meeting the Fairy Queen (depending on if I pick up an extra item or not), which would indicate that I'm only around 100-110 points.
I'm not sure why it wouldn't set me to 150?

For reference, I've killed four bosses including Viy (not Sakit) and have plenty of items at the moment...
Xirix 11 May, 2019 @ 4:17pm
Okay just to add an amendment to this guide, Xelpud won't give dialogue about Mulbruk waking up until two guardians are dead, so just keep that in mind.
