Batman: Arkham City's PC port is notoriously horrible. Here are some things you can try to fix that (and get to play a really good Batman game in the process).

Driver Updates

Your drivers may be out of date. It may be a decade old game but you never know whether a simple driver update could work or not. Update your graphics card's drivers first and PhysX drivers second (Nvidia cards only). There are plenty of resources online on how do to this depending on your hardware, just make sure you download the ones matching for your GPU.

Default PhysX Processor (Nvidia)

Your CPU may be set as the PhysX processor instead of your GPU. In Nvidia Control Panel:

3D Settings -> Configure Surround, PhysX

There should be:

PhysX Settings

That is where you set the desired PhysX processor. Set it to your GPU and apply.

Disable DirectX 11 Stuff

For some, the game works fine without enabling any DirectX 11 features. You can disable anything DirectX 11 related from the pre-launch settings menu (where you can also tweak your graphics quality).

Rename .dll file

This fix did it for me, though I followed the previous steps as well. You'll want to go to your game's directory and follow this path:

"...\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham City GOTY\Binaries\Win32"

There you will find a file named

PhysXDevice.dll

Rename the file to

PhysXDevice.dll_old

Make sure your game isn't running when modifying game files. Rumour has it the PhysX in this port isn't great so this change reverts a lot of those hiccups. Not well versed enough to fully explain how it works, but it does nonetheless.

Notes

These are what I tried to solve my issue of the game crashing without an error message as soon as gameplay was about to commence past the first cutscene. The game runs smooth for the most part, places such as the Courthouse drop in frames but it's not unplayable by any means (Edit: that issue somehow got resolved during play and all areas run smooth now). Keep in mind: these aren't definite fixes, and might not help if you have a different issue. Nonetheless, if you have encountered any other fixes, let me know so that I can update the guide to include any/all fixes to get the game running.

Batman: Arkham City is one of my all time faves and a game I played a ton back in the day on the PS3. I was mildly infuriated with this PC port but everything's running mostly fine now. I hope you can get the game running now as it's great fun and hasn't aged poorly whatsoever.

The game still wont launch. I click play, it thinks a bit and then nothing. I've tried every guide i've seen and nothing has fixed it.

The advicce about turning off the DirectX11 features make an incredible difference in game performance! It worked on my laptop before, but with DirectX11 turned off the game runs MUCH faster and smoother. Really huge improvement. If the game is running sluggishly, the first thing to try is to disable DirectX 11. That one change utterly transformed the game's performance.

Hey. How do i change the language? i saw many way´s to do but none of them worked. i got the game a few weeks back and would love to play it in my language.

i tried to change the "language=int" in the editor and also that way where u delete the ";" infront of your language, but none of them worked.

when i click play it waits a few seconds then doesnt do anything

Just booted Mirror's Edge. Works fine for some reason, though I think I have an idea. I've sent you a friend request and I would like you to try something to see if we can replicate the fix
