The only real issue i have with the russian compass was reading it at a glans. tiny ass numbers.

Yeah, there's also conveniently a yellow notch by Север too. Compass' are generally made to be universally readable even without the context of the language. They've been that way for at least a couple centuries.

I speak Russian and was able to figure it out pretty quickly, but I definitely could see non-speakers or people that have never used a real compass before having difficulty with this. I'm a bit shocked people make it to adulthood never having used a real compass though. I'm from a major city, and have used them.
