I.. I think I skip ahead to daggerfall (and then probably learn it's just as balls hard) :D
Thankfully archers are a bit better in Daggerfall, not having the stupid range limit for one. However the real "best class" in Daggerfall is to make your own custom class that has all the advantages and disadvantages you want. Be aware though that the disadvantage of using bows in Daggerfall is that running out of arrows is possible, and you burn through them much more quickly than in more modern ES titles.
I was aware of items that allowed me to cast spells through its usage but I didn't get lucky for the cast light one.
Actually no you can't hit enemies from far away even if you know they are there with the bow at least. I've spammed arrows at an enemy from a distance with water separating us in the first dungeon in Hammerfell (spamming arrows at an enemy while they were at that range of darkness; can still see the creature sprite moving around) and sat there for quite some time at disbelief of what was happening. This was with Agility at 100. It just felt so unfair and unbalanced witnessing that on top of everything else with the disadvantages of playing as the warrior archer. I can't cast a light spell and I can't shoot through the darkness to kill an orc or whatever that was like 10 feet away. Usually dying in 2-3 hits. Yeah, I was completely in disbelief. Kept shooting until the bow broke.
I hope the archer is better in Daggerfall.
(Curse you, comment character limit.)
