Big, stationary, and ugly, just like me mum. Keeping with the similarities, these forts pack one hell of a punch. Their difficulty is indicated by how many dots they have on their map icon.


Capturing a fort provides several benefits such as:

• Revealing the surrounding uncharted areas (i.e. not a marked map location)
  
• Providing a safe area to use a harbormaster
  
• Providing an officer to remove your wanted level

Each fort follows the same procedure.

• Destroy external defenses (walls which fire cannons and towers which fire mortars)
  
• Dock and enter the fort
  
• Fight through enemies and kill Fort Officers
  
• Break into the office and kill the Fort Commander

Simple, right?

WRONG

Depending on location and difficulty, forts can be the least fun thing you'll do all game. These tips are designed to make the experience less painful. So, let's actually start the list now.

Most forts are on lone islands in open areas. Use this to your advantage. The most effective way to evade its shots while also shooting at it is to circle around it at just below travel speed. While your cannons reload, fire mortars at the towers before the walls.

Forts are all located in restricted zones, usually patrolled by a few enemy ships. Some, however, have ships specifically stationed outside them.

Before engaging with the fort, put the surrounding ships into boarding mode. If The Jackdaw is heavily damaged, simply stop and board one to repair. The fort and other ships will stop shooting during the boarding for some reason.

Always visit a harbormaster before attacking a fort, you don't want to run out of mortar shots before you can take out the entire fort.
