Drilling Rig

Descripción
Just a simple automatic drilling rig, it uses the new merge block to allow the whole rig to move around more smoothly, and uses the new autolock feature to allow for smoother drilling. The rig consists of 8 large cargo containers, 8 chairs, 4 refineries, 4 assemblers, 4 medical bays, 4 large reactors, and 2 cockpits. The rig also uses two rows of collectors and a few connectors on the shaft to easily allow the materials to use the conveyor system on the main rig. Though materials are not shared though refineries yet so you will need to seperate them out evenly with eachother. This also uses a field of gravity generators near the drill head to collect any remnants of ore leftover by the drills.

Instructions:
1. Turn the shaft landing gears to autolock and set to unlimited force.
2. Turn the guide rail landing gears to autolock and set to 2.5KN.
3. Turn on the shaft gravity generator to 0.02G.
4. Turn off the merge blocks and wait untill the drills come in contact with the surface.
5. Set the shaft gravity generator to a full 1G and turn on the drills.
6. Let the rig drill.
7. When it is done the shaft landing gears should autolock to the main rig.

Note: If you are drilling into a rock that is hollow it is best to set the shaft gravity generator to 0.25G so the drill head does not shear off then it hits the cave wall.

Retraction:
1. Turn off the drills.
2. Set the shaft gravity generator to -0.02G.
3. Turn on the merge blocks for both the shaft and the main rig.
4. Turn autolock off for the shaft landing gears and unlock them.
5. Let the shaft retract and then merge with the main rig.
6. Now move to a new area and drill again.

Note: The guide rail landing gears can be left on autolock this decreases the friction of the shaft moving up and down and is vital when drilling. If this is off when drilling the vibration of the drills destroys the landing gears and you cannot use a full 1G on the shaft gravity generator.

This is awesome! Even with basic knowledge, i managed to make this thing work. Nice job!

This is amazingly Craycray. I wish i could build something like this sometime.

A tiny issue with 1 of the shafts landing gears not letting go. looks like i have to spam unlock in the control panel. Thats the only issue i got with this masterpiece

Despite the piston update gravity based drilling is more reliable
I improved on your design and made it more suitable for survival.
I credit you with the inspiration.

This is insane.. The only improvements I've made are a shedload of gatling turrets for survival, some welders to repair on the go and some cockpits on both merge thingies to give you some control of the drill itself.. So so so good man... I love this!

Next job for you, mayve some wheels to keep it even more stable?? :-)

I use conveyors becaused they lined up with a landing gear guide rail, I tryed the conveyor tubes but it bounced around in the guide rail. The end of the shaft with the 4 connectors moved out of place throwing the materials out into space the regular conveyors made it more inline with the collectors.

Quick question, but why was the shaft made of conveyors and not conveyor tubes? Was it because it needed to be gripped by the landing gears to prevent vibration, or for some other reason? Durability?

well i couldnt get it to work.. everything was already setup so i turned off the merge block and i saw an explosion. No drills moving..a video on how to use this would be so helpful..the instructions just arent clear enough..sorry

Which landing gears do you turn off so you can fly the drill to a new location?

Would you be able to reduce shaft vibration by increasing the shafts from 1 to 4? I know it would require some reengineering, but I think it might prevent some longterm damage
