The repeat orders idea you're thinking of are likely for those setting solo ships up prior to making a station.
Setting Repeat Orders with a mining order and then a selling order will have a single ship automate to trade within the specific area or set of areas, and has effectively infinite reach. It works well in a small scale, but eventually you'll get a lot more mining ships and, if you're like me, get very tired of the clutter in your ship screen and setting each order set individually.
However, by setting up a station like this and letting it run, it will serve an area completely automatically, and you can just add new ships to expand. The downside is, you are limited to the 3-5 jump gate range as determined by your manager's skill.
Ore min. is 43cr, & is only 2m3 larger than ice. Silicon is the same size, but worth 111cr.
You need a 5star manager, and processing/trading stations in Watchful Gaze/Heretics End due to the distance for ice.
Between the infrastructure requirements to do it yourself, and the price of the various materials, it just don't seem worth it to me, unless the goal is supplying the Boron.
