Starting in Deadpoly.

Several hours in and starting to learn the basics, what works what does not; tools, food, weapons, and a whole host of hats, vest, backpacks and things I have no idea what to do yet. This guide is intended for those just starting and I am sure there is so much I have missed.

In the beginning was a bald man and a frying pan !
In the beginning
Was 'you' male no opportunity to chose gender (hopefully that will change) or if you are hairy, black, Chinese or white.
One weapon the Pothead (frying pan to you and me), good at whacking those fast running or crawling Zombies.
Basic clothes, shirt, pants etc and very limited storage space as no backpack.
No skills or attributes to ponder over, just survive.

You can run, walk and crouch. I think making noise such as running and hitting things to mine for stone, wood, brass, metal all makes noise and can attract those pesky Zombies.
Wood from trees (funny that isnt it)
Stone from boulders
Metal / Brass from vehicles which also re-spawn as do other resources after while - when a vehicle has been exhausted of its metal it will loose all colour and turn white.

Various drinks, food and loot can be found in all sorts of places, mostly laying on the ground in buildings, rubbish dumps, and on Zombies. Food helps you replenish HEALTH, STAMINA, keeps you Hydrated, some food is good to keep you hydrated and healed, others will help in one area only.
Pots of Paracetamol will heal you for a lot (25 hit points but reduce you hydration by -5).

Hopefully by now you have survived and had a sneak about - one big world called Garden City to explore (unsure if there are underground areas but have not found any as yet), lots of skyscrapers and lovely views across the city and bay. Not tried jumping of the top of a building yet ! imagine will create a red splodge and become a Zombie (NOPE cant kill yourself)

Save your game frequently as death can come around any corner (keep your health up) before entering battle. Easy to save as you go and nothing works that finding an elusive tool, getting killed and not having saved for a while because the world does change items if you reload or restart .

Think about creating a box to store those interesting items as once you have found items they can disappear if left from one save to another, very frustrating when you have chopped trees down for wood left them on the floor and poof there gone in a jiffy !

Things to keep you well on your travels:

Each food item or liquid that you can drink (don't try fuel conditioner don't make you run any better) has 4 stats associated with it as well as a name. All come singly apart from painkiller (10) and a plastic container of water (large amount to slake that thirst 10 slurps). Some foods will satisfy combinations say an apple will provide a big boast to hunger and some to thirst.

The four stats are Hit Points Hunger Thirst Stamina
  • Apple 0 20 10 0
  • Brodo's Java 0 5 10 50
  • Tomatoes 0 20 0 0
  • Pumpkin 25 0 -5 0
  • Pizza slice 0 20 0 0
  • Banana
  • Epinephrine 10 -5 -10 100
  • Medical Kit 100 0 0 -100

Weapons
There are many weapons from rifles, swords and everyday items that can be slotted into one of two slots. Some weapons can also be used to gather wood, metal or stone but some will be much better at it than others, for example a frying pan isn't much good at cutting down trees but can be used in an emergency, as well as bashing Zombies

Pot Head (start weapon frying pan me thinks) cuts down wood at 1-2 per hit, 1 stone per hit
  • Pipe
  • Multipan
  • Crowbar cuts stone 1-2 per hit, 1-3 for metal.
  • Stop Sign
  • Odachi Sword (Japanese sword)
  • Looseal (baseball bat wrapped in wire)
  • M4 Rifle 5.56mm x 45mm ammo

  • Mosin Nagant Rifle 7.62mm x 54mm
  • Fire Axe, Crossbow
  • Scar L & H rifle, Kabuto

Tools - some will be required to make for example and anvil which will allow you to access further blueprints. Just remember you will need one or more tools (blueprints will tell you which tool you need to craft a particular item) in your backpack to make items, plus resources.
  • Hacksaw
  • Wrench
  • Mallet
  • Wire cutter - use on lamp posts as will salvage you wire and circuit boards
  • Screwdriver
  • Sledgehammer
  • Fishing rod (got one but not used it yet)

This is just a few of the items that I have found after 5 hours being busy making my base - crafting doors, window shutters, collecting desks and chairs as well as boxes to hold my scavenged items (if left on the floor then can disappear be warned).
I would love to add a little image for each item above, you never know I might get around to it.
Happy Deadpolying.
TIPS
A few tips that may help

TIP 1: Bandages are FREE ! just open your (press TAB) character and you will see a tab marked crafting, there you will see lots of basis crafting blueprints, clicking on the bandages will enable you to make sets of 5 + bandages, no need to hunt cloth, and yes you will need them.
Place a few rolls by dragging them and placing in your 'hot' slots at the bottom of the screen, and use the corresponding number on your keypad to choose the slot.
Zombies can be a little nasty and take bites out of you (no idea yet if having better clothing helps with armour or not and hence better at stopping bites, slashes etc).
Use bandages between fights to gain some of that health back.

TIP 2: Whilst fixing yourself up with bandages, you can only walk not run and you cant wack a Zombie whilst using a bandage, your at the mercy of being hit. But if in dire danger walk and bandage or press X to stop the task to fight.

TIP 3: I like the nail gun (cheap to use nails made from metal) - shot a zombie and the rest will come and find you, stand in the water and its like being in a shooting gallery, before you know it you have head shotted 20 zombies and can pick up the goodies. Good to clear and area out.

TIP 4: BUNKER access - I found that I ensured my health was 100% lots of ammo, trigger the wave of zombies when you drop down a layer, dash out, take them down. Go back in when you find the boss, I was able to shoot the hell out of him (took 100 nails) to kill him and not once did he follow me out of his room, so easy to shoot then loot.
