OwedEvil's Mass Effect ANDROMEDA modding guide
By OwedEvil
This is my mod guide for Mass Effect Andromeda. It's pretty simple and easy to follow and includes some of, what I consider, core fixes/improvements that are key to making this game enjoyable.

I put guide updates in the comments, so sub to them if you want to be kept updated on the info.

Unfortunately, there are some very infrequent crashes that occur with this mod build. However, they are easy to work around. For the fixes see the relevant section.

Update; A quick troubleshooting tip; it's not strictly necessary, but a good thing to do is to not install mods till they are applicable. Sometimes problems can arise if this rule isn't followed, but usually nothing will go wrong.

If you notice a mod not working properly, try moving it to the BOTTOM of the "Applied mods" list. Mods at the bottom take greater priority and can potentially fix issues.

I have gotten the Steam version of MEA and noticed things changed and my build does not work with the version of FMM it previously used to be dependent on, nor does it boot up the game successfully. For all I know the newest FMM will make my build work fine, and I have indeed discovered it boots the game. I will be doing at least a partial play through and testing my build again and modifying it as necessary. Sorry for any inconvenience.
I did a partial play-through and my mod build does seem to be working. Sorry, but too busy with work and life to do a full test play-through.

Recommended mods and updated (details) mods
  • Better Squad [www.nexusmods.com]

This mod will make your squad die less often and make it seem like they have (at least mostly) fully functioning brains and worth and value with Harder Insanity installed. I have not tried it without Harder Insanity, and do not recommend it without.

  • Nomad 4WD and 6WD New Display Mode [www.nexusmods.com]

This nice mod makes it far more evident which mode you are in, ya know, in case you ever don't know.

  • Larger Enemy Groups [www.nexusmods.com]

This mod replaces the increased portion of the Increased Kett/Remnant mod. But I highly recommend still using the slower leveling and Harder Insanity from it.

  • Quick Loot [www.nexusmods.com]

  • No Scope No Problem [www.nexusmods.com]

  • Cinematic Realism Lighting Overhaul with Depth-of-Field [www.nexusmods.com]

I VERY HIGHLY recommend downloading this mod if your PC can handle it as it makes the game look gorgeous, even movie-like.

Consult the mod's description[www.nexusmods.com] on how to install it. Reshade[reshade.me], is an absolutely phenomenal program that can be used with most games to, usually, drastically improve graphic quality, FYI.

I did not enjoy the "Cinematic Realism Redux Beta Updated --Name will be changed and moved to separate page shortly" version, you can try it if you want, but makes everything red. I used 2.3.

    CONTROLS:

Regarding controls, I recommend disabling the DOF with "/" on the NUM PAD . The DOF is pretty but gets in the way too much. If pressing a button is tedious you can disable it and save it disabled in the Reshade menu.

    - F1 toggles ReShade menu
    - END toggles the ReShade itself on and off
    - F11 takes screenshots. You'll need to fix the file path in the "settings" tab of the ReShade in-game menu.
    - Toggle film grain off and on by pressing 3 on the numberpad.
    - Toggle sharpness with 5 on numberpad
    - Toggle cinematic black bars with 0 on numberpad
    - Toggle vignette with * on numberpad
    - Toggle bloom with 6 on numberpad
    - Toggle Depth of Field (DoF) off and on with "/"

For convenience, here are a couple vids showing off the preset.

Main mod's download and install instructions.
This is really a no brainer but dont do MP with mods installed.

Here is the load order I partially tested with FMM 1.0.6.0 and will be testing gradually over a more prolonged period of time;

  • Frosty Tool Suite for MEA [www.nexusmods.com]

Extract to a convenient location and run from there. How you use teh manager is...

    • Click import and navigate to a mod.
    • After the mod is imported, you must double click it to apply it.
    • After mods are applied and each shows up on the right hand pane, you must launch the game from the manager for them to actually install.
    • Launch the game from the mod manager from now on, I Pinned the icon to my taskbar so I can launch it from there, easiily.

IMPORTANT: At the beginning of the game, specifically after arriving at the big ship, having a ponytail on Cara can cause a crash, for some odd reason. In the downloads of the Ponytail mod, simply get the ponytail crash fix. Make sure to use this[github.com] version (1.0.3.1) of the mod manager so this mod will work.

All mods that have a blank in their description under their download link are to be installed with this mod manager (which is almost all of them).

    • Replace male dancers on Kadara [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Camera Mod [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Faster Kadara doors [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Shorter Landing and Departure Cinematics [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Remnant Decryption Key Limit Increase [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Cursor fix [www.nexusmods.com]

This mod fixes the "permanent mouse cursor in the middle of your screen" bug. To be on the safe side, I would not install this till you need it.

      Installation
Copy the dinput8.dll file in your ME:A folder.

    • Headphones Be Gone V1.09 [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Shut up SAM [www.nexusmods.com]

OPTIONAL, this mod completely removes some comments that, at times, can be excessive but generally aren't, IMO. I didn't use it at first, but eventually all the temperature shift notifications got to me, and i installed this. I really wish there was an option to simply reduce SAM/s notifications, but not having that option I don't regret installing this mod. Still, I would start off the game without this mod and install it at some point when you feel the need.

    • Asari Tweaks [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Lush Lashes [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Nomad Top Speed Increase [www.nexusmods.com]

I HIGHLY recommend getting the 3x boost option due to it making planet exploration more exciting, preventing it from devolving into tedious traveling.

    • Balanced Melee Weapons [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Weight Cooldown Bonus [www.nexusmods.com]

This mod does make the game more easy, sometimes. If you do not experiment, such as using weapons/classes that are not the best for fun and challenge, then I do not recommend using this mod.

    • Liam Hair Be Gone [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Better Beards [www.nexusmods.com]

      Quick Loot [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Peebee Tweak [www.nexusmods.com]

Make certain to use the one that removes her raccoon mask and makes her hot.

    • Pretty Cora [www.nexusmods.com]

    • Cora and Liam Overhaul [www.nexusmods.com]

I just used this mod to give Cora a large blond ponytail and asari armor, nothing for Liam. If you choose a ponytail variant, make certain to get the Ponytail Fix which prevents a crash just before you discover the Nexus during, and for a time, after the subway. Make certain to UNINSTALL the Ponytail Fix after you use it or there will be permanent clipping of Cora's hair.

Increased Kett And Remnant Spawns [www.nexusmods.com]

Use this or Larger Enemy Groups. LEG seems easier to install and the same thing, but I have not tested it out for an entire playthrough yet. Make sure to get the optional Harder Insanity and slower leveling, even if you use LEG

Do not use the dropship fix with the regular increased Kett, it is to be used instead. What I do is install those and start off with reduced difficulty, gradually working my way up to Insanity. If you're trying out fun, but not too terribly good, loadouts and specs simply reduce the difficulty temporarily. IF YOU THINK VANILLA IS CHALLENGING, THEN THIS MOD IS NOT FOR YOU. This is a big balls mod that makes combat much more thrilling and exciting, and also tactical, forcing you to use cover more intelligently. If yer not an against the grain, piss into the wind type of guy, then this may not be for you. I do recommend trying it out. I am unclear if the mod applies on lower difficulty (I think so) but the difficulty is reasonable with it lowered in-game, so cant hurt to at least try it and work your way up to insanity.

      Increased Outlaws Spawns [www.nexusmods.com]

    • The Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairey will hate you if you download mods that are black. You have been warned!

      Romance For All [www.nexusmods.com]

Play with the audio level sliders and you can "emphasize" breathing sounds while planet exploring
Crash Fixes.
Thanks to Jeslis for providing the info. If you are having difficulty starting the game through FMM you can try the steps in the linked site.

A strange bug occurred where my game would not load besides a black screen appearing. To fix it, I toggled on or off a mod i rarely use, such as the headphones begone mod. Triggering the mod application process for the manager seems to be specifically what fixed it.

These other two crashes were not with my Final load order, and may not happen if you adhere to it. They can be fixed by toggling off mods by launching without the manager and/or through having certain mods at the bottom of the load order.

At the beginning of the game, specifically after arriving at the big ship, having a ponytail on Cara can cause a crash, for some odd reason. In the downloads of the Ponytail mod, simply get the ponytail crash fix. Use the newest version of FMM, tested with 1.0.6.0.

Another crash occurred after the unskippable cutscene where you first discover teh small(ish) ship and try to get around clearance to take it. To fix that crash, I temporarily disabled Peebee Tweak 2.0. I did not get this crash with FMM 1.0.6.0.

I was unaware about this issue and never encountered it till I saw someone else with it, but if you get a mouse cursor issue that the mod does not fix which involves opening the Steam overlay then reference this post. https://steamproxy.net/app/1238000/discussions/0/3592213151643663153/?tscn=1669733205

Hey, so I clicked the link on the frosty mod thing, but it says it's been taken down by the author.

Can you guide me on how to download the mods now? I'm new to modding.

I am not a mod expert and do not know how to analyze mod file structures, nor do I know of a compatibility wizard program. However, as far as I can gather it is compatible with every mod except No Scope No Problem, potentially. But, If you put No Scope No Problem at the bottom of your load order (or at least below Balanced Weapons) it should override.

Is Balanced Weapons (from the maker of Better Squad & Balanced Melee Weapons) ok to use with this guide? Like it isn't incompatible with something like No Scope No Problem?

Thank you, busy at work but will add them soon.

You forgot a few more mods:

Shorter cutscenes (this one is a must)

Skip Bioware logo

No exclamation marks All Menus (phew, my OCD says thanks)

Beep be gone (for MP)

Warp Fix (also for MP)
And for female Ryders (cough, cough) out there Athletic Outfit No Bra.

GUIDE UPDATE- I partially tested the mod build with FMM 1.0.6.0 and the game seems to have normal stability and all, or at least most, of the mods are working as far as I can see. I did some guide edits for clarity and to ad useful info as well as including more mods I enjoy which I did not get to adding to the previous version of teh guide.

I am not far into teh game regarding testing the newest FMM and teh Steam version of MEA, but gradually over a prolonged period I will be doing more testing and will add to the guide as and if needed. However, it is in a pretty final state atm.
OwedEvil  [author] 10 Sep, 2022 @ 7:21pm
Well sht, I almost suggested that. No problem.
Jeslis 10 Sep, 2022 @ 4:38pm
Hi Owed! I got it working.
I followed https://www.reddit.com/r/MassEffectAndromeda/comments/oews2y/frosty_mod_manager_not_working_for_mass_effect/h48vpho/

The TLDR of which was probably 'Run Frosty's Mod manager as administrator'.. Because you were right, Frosty's fix is NOT required.

Thanks for the random bits of info. Helped put it all together!
Jeslis 10 Sep, 2022 @ 3:20pm
I know right! .. Like.. FMM has a scan for games button, and it FINDS THE GAME in steam no problem.. why is that a thing if it doesn't support Steam.

I swear this problem is probably something stupid with Origin where because it wont let Frosty Launch the game it's blocking modding for me... uhg.
OwedEvil  [author] 10 Sep, 2022 @ 2:39pm
How strange, the only thing I did was direct FMM to my Steam install.
