Introduction + How the fix works
Hi guys, I hope you're doing well.
If you're not, then it's probably because EA is flipping the bird on you by bricking your entire PC - and all just because you want to enjoy a classic in the Need for Speed franchise.

This guide is here to provide you with a solution that helped me make the game playable again and stopped random freezes and crashes from happening.

How the fix works

Basically, a lot of your PC's general system tasks run on "Processor 0", or "core no. 1".
When you start a game, your PC might assign some of the load to this core as well.
This can cause instabilities as your system tasks fluctuate a lot.
By shifting the workload to your other cores and completely letting this core be, the game runs more stable.
This "fix" can also be applied to other games to maybe not increase frame rate but to keep it more consistent.
1. Fix #1
Here I'll show you what I did.

  • First, start NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered.

  • Then, open your Task Manager (either by right-clicking on the Taskbar or searching it in the Windows-Start-Menu.

  • In the Task Manager, click on "Details" (1), then scroll down and find NFS11Remastered.exe

  • Rick click, choose "Set Affinity"

  • A new window will open. Click on "CPU 0" to untick the box (1), confirm with "OK" (2).
    Leave everything as is.
2. Pros / Cons of this fix
Pros
  • Fixes the crashing
  • Lets you enjoy a nostalgic title again
  • Doesn't take long to execute

Cons
  • You have to do this every time you start the game, unless you install and configure a program that can automatically set affinities for selected programs (see Fix #2 for this!).
Fix #2
If you don't want to click through the Task Manager every time you want to play NFS HP Remastered, there is another way which involves using third party software.
In this situation I will use a free program called "Process Lasso" - there are other programs on the market which can achieve similar results.

  • You can get it here[bitsum.com].

  • After installing, start NFS HP Remastered.

  • Switch to Lasso.

  • Find NFS11Remastered.exe (1), right-click, "CPU Affinity" (2), "Always" (3), click on CPU 0 to untick the box (4).

  • After closing Lasso, it should keep running in the background and should be in your autostart, so whenever you start your PC it starts as well.
Pros / Cons of this fix
Pros
  • You don't have to click through the Task Manager to play NFS HP Remastered without freezes / crashes
  • Lets you enjoy a nostalgic title again
  • Lightweight tool
  • Only requires 37,5 MB of disk space

Cons
  • You need to install additional software
3. Closing words
Thank you for reading my guide.
The intention of it was to help people who are in a similar situation as I was in. Such a crash caused me to lose my entire save game, having to replay everything again.

I am aware this is just a small fix and it would be infinitely better if EA actually cared and fixed it themselves, but until then we have to help ourselves with methods like this one.

If you enjoyed the guide please leave a Like and a "Favourite", it helps others who have the same struggles see this guide so they can fix it, to quickly get back to playing this cool game.

Agree, that is indeed a useful tip what you just said! It's useful in general whenever your PC does weird stuff.
I'd also advise to run "Windows Memory Diagnostic" to rule out RAM-related issues, I did that one too. Sadly that one was not enough, tho I've been using Process Lasso for months now and I don't even notice it running in the background. I even found that it helped me with my Saints Row - related crashes, as that game just *hates* using too many CPU-cores.

A good practice to remember when a game or program bricks the PC and restarts/or you have to force a shutdown. Always run system file check, just to make sure that no critical system files got damaged in the event. Open up cmd prompt as Admin, type "sfc /scannow" and let it run. Usually a fairly quick process for SSD's to handle. Thanks for the tip!

Ah that's unfortunate that it's happening to you mate.
The game is really unpolished, a terrible port.

This guide is maybe a bit more specific and has nothing to do with controllers, however if I ever find a solution to your specific problem I might post an update and / or text you personally.

I just hope the fixes that helped me in my situation also help others in similar situations.
Take care and good luck with your issue!

This guide is useful, but it's not that useful, if your Xbox One controller disconnects from the game/PC, then you're boned with 1 fps unless the controller reconnects by itself (which is a 50/50 chance for me of happening) pretty shitty honestly how that is even allowed to occur. The sheer amount of matches I've been kicked or D/C'd from just because my controller disconnected itself is staggeringly bullshit.

Heh don't worry about that, was just an exaggeration.

The way the game crahes is just hilarious and it can feel like your PC might not recover from it.

My favourite one was the game freezing just -some- programs, letting Netflix run in the background but suddenly with the audio out of sync.
